Chapter 46: Control and Collapse

754 Words
The training grounds felt different that morning. Quieter. Not because they were empty—but because of the way people watched. Diana could feel it. Even without looking. Whispers followed her now. Not loud—but present. Curious. Cautious. Princess. The word still didn’t sit right. She tightened her grip on her spear, exhaling slowly as she stepped into the center of the training circle. “Focus.” Dylan’s voice cut through everything else. Steady. Grounded. Diana glanced at him briefly. “I am.” “No,” he said calmly. “You’re thinking.” She frowned. “That’s the same thing.” “It’s not.” That annoyed her. Good. It pushed everything else back—if only slightly. “Again,” he said. Diana shifted her stance, letting the familiar pull of energy gather beneath her skin. This time, it came faster—stronger. Too strong. It surged before she could fully stabilize it. Diana’s breath hitched. “Slow it,” Dylan said. “I’m trying—” “Don’t try. Control it.” Easy for him to say. The energy flickered violently, pushing against her control. Her grip on the spear tightened as she forced herself to stay grounded. For a moment— It worked. Then it slipped. The surge snapped outward. Dylan moved instantly. His hand caught her wrist—not harsh, not gentle—just enough to anchor her. “Feel it,” he said. Diana stilled. Her breath uneven. The energy didn’t disappear. But it stopped fighting. Slowly… it settled. Her shoulders dropped slightly. “…I had it,” she muttered. “You almost did.” She pulled her hand back—but not immediately. That brief contact lingered longer than it should have. Diana looked away first. “…Everyone’s watching now,” she said under her breath. Dylan didn’t react to the crowd. “They were always watching,” he replied. “That’s different.” “No,” he said. “You just notice it now.” Diana exhaled sharply, turning slightly away. “…I didn’t ask for this.” “I know.” That made her pause. His tone wasn’t dismissive. Or distant. Just… certain. She glanced at him again. “…Then why does it feel like everything expects something from me now?” Dylan held her gaze. “Because it does.” That wasn’t comforting. Before she could respond, footsteps approached. Kaelen. Of course. “You’re pushing too fast,” he said, arms crossed as he stopped nearby. “I’m fine,” Diana replied. “You’re unstable.” “I said I’m fine.” Theon appeared shortly after, quieter as always, but just as observant. “The pressure has increased,” he noted. “That’s obvious,” Diana muttered. Kaelen’s expression hardened slightly. “Which means you need to adjust.” “I am adjusting.” “Not enough.” Diana’s patience thinned. “I just found out I’m the long-lost princess of a kingdom built on secrets and ancient magic—what exactly do you expect?” Silence followed. Brief. Then— “Growth,” Theon said simply. Diana scoffed softly, turning away again. “…Of course.” Kaelen’s voice softened slightly—but not by much. “And awareness.” Diana didn’t respond. Theon continued, his tone more measured. “Camilla does not simply maintain her power.” Diana’s gaze shifted back to him. “She sustains her appearance deliberately,” he said. “Beauty is not vanity to her—it is strategy.” Diana’s brows furrowed slightly. Kaelen nodded. “Powerful men are easier to lure when desire clouds judgment.” Diana’s grip tightened slightly around her spear. “So she makes herself… irresistible,” she said. “Yes,” Theon replied. A pause. “Then binds them.” Diana felt a chill settle faintly beneath her skin. “…That’s calculated.” “That’s survival,” Dylan said. Her gaze flickered to him. His expression hadn’t changed. But something in his tone had. Colder. More aware. Diana looked away again, her thoughts heavier now. Everything about this— The kingdom. Her past. Camilla. It all felt like pieces of something far bigger than her. And yet— She was standing right at the center of it. “…Again,” she said suddenly. Dylan didn’t question it. He stepped closer. “Focus,” he repeated. Diana steadied her stance. This time— She didn’t think. She felt. And for the first time since the training began— The energy didn’t fight her.
