Chapter 63

697 Words
The battlefield was no longer balanced. It was breaking. Dylan’s hands trembled—but he didn’t stop. Light flickered around his palms as he forced healing through his body again, stabilizing what he could before shifting to the others. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t complete. But it was enough to keep them standing. Kaelen exhaled sharply as the energy settled into him, just enough strength returning for him to push himself upright again. “…You look worse than I do,” he muttered. Dylan didn’t respond. He was already moving. Theon was next. Dylan knelt beside him, his jaw tightening as he took in the damage. “…Stay with me,” he said. Theon’s eyes barely focused, but he didn’t resist. That was enough. Energy surged again. Rough. Unstable. Forced. Dylan absorbed the backlash this time, his breath hitching as the strain hit him harder than before. Still— he didn’t stop. “I said,” he muttered under his breath, “I’m not losing anyone.” Across the battlefield— the castle was falling apart. Lancaster was no longer holding. It was barely surviving. The creatures kept coming. Relentless. Endless. Each wave worse than the last. Soldiers were slower now. Their movements heavier. Their numbers thinning. Herald blocked another strike, but this time it forced him back a step. Then another. For the first time— he was losing ground. Nearby, Aaron drove a creature down, but two more replaced it instantly. There was no space to breathe. No time to recover. Behind them, Maltida’s voice cut through the chaos. “Hold your positions!” But even she could feel it. The shift. Victoria faltered slightly as she tried to heal another soldier, her energy flickering unevenly. “I—I can’t—” “You can,” Maltida said firmly. “Focus.” But the strain was showing. On all of them. Joanna pressed her hands against another wounded soldier, her movements slower now, her power thinning. “…We’re running out of time,” she said quietly. Not far from them, Alaric and Seraphina fought with unyielding force—but even that wasn’t enough anymore. The creatures were pushing through. Closing in. “They’re breaking through!” a soldier shouted. And this time— no one could deny it. Hope was slipping. Back on the battlefield— Dylan staggered slightly as he stood. He had pushed too far. Again. Kaelen caught him before he could fall fully. “…You’re going to pass out,” he muttered. Dylan pulled away slightly. “Not yet.” Theon managed to stand now—barely—but he was still alive. That was what mattered. For a brief moment— they held. Then— a distant sound cut through the chaos. Not from the creatures. Not from the battlefield. From the horizon. Kaelen frowned. “…You hear that?” Dylan turned. At first— nothing. Then— movement. Not shadows. Not monsters. Soldiers. Marching. Fast. Precise. Organized. A new force surged into the battlefield like a wave cutting through darkness. Their armor distinct. Their formation unbroken. Their presence— overwhelming. The creatures closest to them fell almost instantly, cut down before they could react. At the front— a banner rose. Barely recognizable. Verillion. Relief didn’t come as a cheer. It came as breath. As space. As a chance. “They're still in existence and they came…” Kaelen muttered, almost in disbelief. Dylan exhaled slowly, tension loosening just slightly in his chest. “…Just in time.” Verillion forces pushed forward without hesitation, cutting through the battlefield with precision that shifted the momentum almost immediately. Where there had been collapse— there was resistance again. Where there had been loss— there was a chance. Back at the castle— the shift was felt instantly. Diana’s father paused— just for a second— as the pressure in front of him eased. Then he saw them. Reinforcements. The line steadied. Not restored. But no longer breaking. And for the first time since the battle began— hope returned. Not strong. Not certain. But enough. Because the war wasn’t over yet. And now— they weren’t fighting it alone.
