Chapter 66

517 Words
Chapter 66 Camilla stepped back. Slowly. For the first time since the war began— fear showed. Her breath was uneven, her body flickering at the edges, barely holding form as the power she had stolen began to fail her. “…No…” The word left her quietly. Uncertain. Above her— the sky burned. The phoenix hovered, vast and radiant, its presence pressing down on the battlefield with unbearable weight. Its flames no longer wild— but controlled. Focused. Watching. Camilla staggered another step back. Then another. She turned. And tried to run. Not with speed. Not with power. But with what little strength she had left. The battlefield held its breath. Then— a scream. Sharp. Furious. The phoenix moved. It descended in a burst of fire, cutting through the air with terrifying speed as flames trailed behind it like a comet. Camilla didn’t make it far. Flaming claws extended— and caught her. A scream tore from her instantly. Not controlled. Not measured. Terrified. The phoenix rose again, carrying her into the sky, its grip unrelenting as fire spread across her form. Camilla struggled. Twisted. Tried to pull free. But there was no escape. The flames burned hotter. Brighter. Relentless. “Stop—!” Her voice broke. Her strength failed. Below— Dylan stared upward, his chest tight, his breath caught somewhere between disbelief and shock. “…It’s over…” he whispered. The others didn’t speak. Couldn’t. They watched. Because there was nothing else left to do. High above— the phoenix climbed. Higher. Faster. Camilla’s screams grew sharper as the flames consumed her, her body breaking apart under the heat. “PLEASE—!” The word tore from her— raw— desperate— But the phoenix did not stop. Its wings folded inward. Its flames surged outward— burning brighter than ever before. And then— it dashed. A violent burst of speed tore through the sky as it shot upward, fire exploding outward in its wake. The atmosphere itself reacted. Heat spread rapidly. The sky burned. Below, the ground began to scorch, cracks forming as the temperature rose unnaturally fast. Even the distant lands near Lancaster felt it—the air heating, pressing, threatening to consume everything in its reach. “Cooling formations—now!” a distant voice shouted. Magic surged across the battlefield as those below reacted, casting stabilizing spells to counter the overwhelming heat. Even then— it barely held. Above them— the phoenix burned brighter. Brighter. Until it reached its peak. And Camilla— finally broke. Her screams turned into something unrecognizable— before cutting off completely. Her form collapsed inward— burned— reduced— To ash. Nothing remained. The sky held the silence. The flames lingered. And then— slowly— the light began to dim. Below, no one moved. Not Dylan. Not Kaelen. Not Theon. They only watched the sky— waiting. Because even though the enemy had fallen— something far greater had just been unleashed. And the war— had ended. But the aftermath— had only just begun.
