Chapter 16: Secrets and Hints

687 Words
The morning fog lingered over the inn, curling around the cobblestones like pale fingers. Diana stood at the edge of the training grounds, her hands brushing over Midnight’s mane, thinking deeply about the events of the past few days. The Dragon Clan’s presence, powerful and quiet, still weighed on her senses. She could feel a pull toward someone she couldn’t fully recognize, as if a piece of her own magic was reaching out… and being blocked. Victoria approached, carrying a tray of morning tea, her green eyes bright with curiosity. “You’ve been unusually quiet, Diana. What’s going on in that head of yours?” Diana sighed, taking the cup. “It’s the Dragon Clan. I can feel them, but not completely. Dylan… his presence is strong, but muted. There’s a barrier. Something is blocking me from fully sensing him, or him sensing me.” She paused, thinking hard. “It’s… frustrating. Almost like someone doesn’t want us to connect. But why?” Victoria frowned. “A barrier? Could it be… a spell?” Diana nodded slowly. “Yes, but not just any spell. Someone powerful did this intentionally. Whoever it was knew exactly what they were doing. The question is… why? Who would want to block this connection?” Aaron, who had been quietly walking along the edge of the courtyard, joined them. “Barriers like that are rare, Diana. They’re usually placed to hide something… or protect something. In your case, it’s most likely to hide your true power—or your connection to someone.” His eyes flicked toward the treeline. “And judging by the strength of the aura outside… the Dragon Clan can sense more than we realize. They will notice the blockage.” Diana felt a shiver run down her spine. “And Dylan… he’s old. Older than anyone here could imagine. If he senses even part of me… he will notice there’s something off. But he won’t know what. Not yet.” Victoria sipped her tea, thoughtful. “Do you think he knows already? That you’re… someone special?” Diana’s gaze drifted toward the distant trees where Dylan and his parents observed in secret, hidden by a subtle magical shroud. The dragon shifted slightly, wings brushing the air, eyes glowing faintly. She could feel it—even without seeing it fully—that he was trying to sense her, probing the barrier without realizing he was partially blocked. “I think he knows something,” Diana admitted quietly. “But only part of it. There’s a reason the barrier exists… and I’m going to find out what it is.” As if on cue, a ripple of air brushed across the training grounds, carrying a whisper of energy that made Diana’s hair lift slightly. She instinctively held out a hand, feeling the invisible tension in the air. It was subtle, but she recognized the signature—ancient magic, layered, complex, and deliberately hidden. Victoria leaned closer, whispering, “You’re reading it, aren’t you?” Diana nodded. “Yes. Someone left a trace… a hint. Whoever did this wanted it found. They didn’t want it completely hidden. But why? And why now?” Aaron stepped back, watching her closely. “Be careful. You’re sensing only fragments. The barrier’s purpose may be protective… or it could be a warning. Either way, it’s connected to the Dragon Clan’s arrival. Keep your eyes open, Diana. Not everything here is as it seems.” Diana clenched her fists, determination blazing in her red-gold eyes. “I will find the answers… even if it takes everything I have.” Victoria smiled, placing a hand on her sister’s shoulder. “And you won’t have to do it alone. I’ll be right here, watching your back… no matter what.” Diana took a deep breath, feeling the hum of energy around her, the pull of something powerful, ancient, and hidden. The Dragon Clan’s presence was no longer just a curiosity—it was a sign of something far larger than a simple visit. And she knew, deep in her heart, that her life was about to change forever.
