Chapter 56

735 Words
The war did not wait. Even in silence, it moved. Night settled over the capital, but sleep did not come with it. The palace remained awake—lit corridors, guarded halls, quiet urgency in every passing figure. The calm from earlier had already faded, replaced by something sharper. Preparation. Diana stood at the balcony overlooking the inner court, her arms resting lightly against the cold stone railing. Below, soldiers moved in organized patterns, weapons being checked, formations quietly reviewed. No panic. Just readiness. Behind her, the chamber doors opened. She didn’t turn. “You should be resting,” Dylan said. “I’ve rested enough.” “You barely stood an hour ago.” “And I’m standing now.” A pause. Then softer— “That doesn’t mean you’re fine.” Diana exhaled slowly, her gaze still fixed ahead. “I don’t need to be fine,” she said. “I need to be ready.” Dylan stepped beside her, his presence steady but unreadable. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then— “She’ll come for you.” It wasn’t a question. Diana nodded once. “I know.” Nyxara’s voice surfaced, quiet but certain. “She cannot sustain herself much longer.” Kaida followed, low and sharp. “She is starving.” Diana’s fingers tightened slightly against the railing. “…She needs my life force,” she said aloud. Dylan’s gaze shifted to her. “Then we don’t give her the chance.” Inside the war chamber, the atmosphere was heavier than before. Maps were laid across the central table, marked with fading barrier lines, recent breach points, and movement estimates. Theon stood opposite one of the elders. “If the barrier weakens further,” he said, “we won’t be able to contain another breach at this scale.” “We are aware,” the elder replied. “But reinforcing all points simultaneously is not possible.” Kaelen leaned back slightly, arms crossed. “Then we stop waiting for the next one.” All eyes shifted. Dylan stepped forward. “We take the fight to her.” Murmurs followed. Uncertainty. Agreement. Fear. All mixed into one. Queen Maltida spoke carefully. “And if this is what she wants?” Diana stepped into the room. “Then we give it to her.” The room stilled. Her presence alone shifted the weight of the conversation. Not louder. Not forceful. Just… certain. “She’s weakening,” Diana continued. “Every move she’s made has cost her. The breach, the creatures—none of that was free.” King Herald’s gaze hardened slightly. “You’re suggesting we strike now.” “I’m saying we don’t wait for her to recover.” Silence followed. Then— Theon nodded. “She’s right.” Kaelen smirked faintly. “Finally, something straightforward.” Dylan didn’t speak. But he didn’t disagree either. Far from the capital— The air was colder. Darker. Alive with something far more dangerous. Camilla stood at the center of a fractured clearing, the ground beneath her still marked by the remnants of dark magic. Her breathing was controlled. But not steady. A faint tremor ran through her fingers before she clenched them tightly. “…So,” she murmured, almost amused. “They survived.” Behind her, a figure stepped forward. “Barely.” Another voice followed from the shadows. “You expended too much.” Camilla smiled faintly. “Yes,” she said. “I did.” Her gaze lifted toward the distant horizon. Toward the capital. Toward Diana. And something darker flickered in her eyes. “But it was necessary.” A pause. Then softer— “Because now… she’s aware.” One of her generals stepped closer. “You intend to wait?” Camilla let out a quiet breath. “No.” Her smile returned. Cold. Certain. “We move.” Back in the capital— Diana straightened. Her decision no longer forming— but made. “We leave before dawn.” Dylan looked at her. And this time— he smiled slightly. “Good,” he said. “Because I was about to say the same thing.” Miles apart. Same decision. Same timing. Same inevitability. Nyxara whispered: “The path is set.” Kaida’s voice followed: “Let the hunt begin.” And somewhere in the distance— unseen by both sides— the war shifted. Not approaching. Not waiting.
