When love starts changing

691 Words
For the first time in many years, Ariana Cole felt like she had finally found something she never thought she would have again — happiness. Michael Ethan had become the person who brought light into the darkest parts of her life. He made her laugh when she wanted to cry, listened when she needed someone, and reminded her that her past did not have to control her future. With Michael, Ariana felt safe. She no longer felt like the abandoned girl who had been left behind by the people she loved. She felt like a woman who was finally being chosen. And that feeling was everything. Their relationship grew stronger with each passing day. Michael introduced her to parts of his world she had never seen before. He showed her that love could exist in simple moments — sharing conversations late at night, laughing over small jokes, and being there for each other when life became difficult. Ariana started believing his promises. Especially one promise. “I’m not going anywhere,” Michael had told her. Those words became the one thing her heart held onto. Because after losing her mother and being abandoned by her father, all Ariana ever wanted was someone who would stay. But slowly, something began to change. At first, it was small. Michael started becoming quieter. The long conversations they used to have become shorter. The man who once wanted to know everything about her suddenly seemed lost in his own thoughts. Whenever she asked what was wrong, he always gave the same answer. I’m fine. But Ariana knew those words. She had used them herself for years. She knew that sometimes “I’m fine” was just another way of saying “I’m hurting. One evening, she waited for Michael at a restaurant they loved visiting. She checked the time repeatedly as minutes turned into an hour. He was late. Something he had never done before. When he finally arrived, his expression was different. I’m sorry, he said. Ariana studied his face. “Is everything okay? Michael looked away for a moment. Yes. Everything is fine. But it didn’t feel fine. A small fear began growing inside her heart. The same fear she thought she had buried. The fear of being left again. Michael, she said softly, If something is wrong, you can tell me. He looked at her, and for a second, she saw pain in his eyes. But then it disappeared. I promise you, Ariana. There’s nothing you need to worry about. She wanted to believe him. She really did. Because trusting Michael was the hardest and easiest thing she had ever done. Hard because she had spent years protecting her heart. Easy because somehow, he had made her feel like she was safe. But love can become complicated when one person is holding onto secrets. As time passed, Ariana began noticing things she could no longer ignore. Phone calls he refused to answer around her. Meetings he wouldn’t explain. Moments when he looked at her like he was trying to memorize her face. It scared her. Because it felt like he was preparing to say goodbye. One night, after Michael dropped her home, Ariana stood by her window watching his car disappear into the distance. A strange sadness filled her chest. She hated that feeling. She hated feeling uncertain. She hated feeling like she was waiting for someone to leave. Because she had already lived through that pain once. She didn’t know if she could survive it again. Meanwhile, Michael sat alone in his car, staring at the ring he had secretly bought for her. He loved Ariana. More than he had ever loved anyone. But the secret he carried was becoming heavier every day. Someone from his past had returned, threatening to destroy everything. And Michael knew that protecting Ariana might mean losing her. The next morning, Ariana woke up to a message from Michael that changed everything. I need to see you. We need to talk. Her heart immediately sank. Because deep down, she already knew. Something was about to happen. And this time, love was not going to be easy.
