David’s mother came out of the front room to greet them in the hall. She was delighted to see them. Her smile lit up her whole face, and she moved slowly towards Martha to welcome her. The two women exchanged pecks on the cheeks, and David’s mother held Martha’s hands and took a good look at her. Martha could tell instantly that she was a lovely woman. She had kind eyes. Eyes that could tell a thousand stories. Grey hair neatly pinned back in a small bun. A few loose strands fell down and framed her face. Martha could see that she would have been an attractive woman in her youth.
‘Well, David, she’s a beauty. This is the one. I can tell. You keep hold of this one, boy.’
