Chapter 4: A Good-Looking Face

651 Words
From Xiao Lian, Zuo Xiaoqian learned that she had traveled back in time to a country called the Tian Dynasty. The ruler’s surname was Ling. No matter how hard she racked her brain, Zuo Xiaoqian couldn’t recall any dynasty in history with that name—her history might be terrible, but she knew all the dynastic changes and the rulers who had made their mark in history by heart. Once she confirmed it was a fictional dynasty, Zuo Xiaoqian almost wanted to set off firecrackers to celebrate her good fortune. Why? With such a golden opportunity, she wouldn’t have to worry day and night about accidentally disrupting the course of history—how could she not be happy? However, the only thing that bothered her was her current situation. According to Xiao Lian, before her marriage, she had been the daughter of some high-ranking court official, but due to her eccentric personality, she didn’t seem to be well-liked even in her own family. The anxious look on Xiao Lian’s face as she said this made Zuo Xiaoqian wonder: what kind of person was the original owner of this body? Why wasn’t she liked anywhere she went? Or was it simply that she was unattractive? Wait a minute—“Xiao Lian, could you get me a mirror, please?” Xiao Lian gave Zuo Xiaoqian another puzzled look before turning and running off at her inquiring glance, stumbling and nearly falling. Zuo Xiaoshan didn’t notice Xiao Lian’s odd behavior. She reached up to touch her face: “Wow, the texture is absolutely incredible…” “Your Highness, here is your mirror!” Xiao Lian respectfully presented the bronze mirror with both hands: “Your Highness is the most beautiful person this servant has ever seen. If only Your Highness would smile more often, no one in the entire world could hold a candle to you…” Listening to Xiao Lian’s extremely earnest and sincere praise, Zuo Xiaoqian reached out and took the bronze mirror with a puzzled expression. “If it’s truly as you say, then why am I so unpopular?” The hazy copper mirror revealed the outline of a woman: delicate arched brows, bright almond-shaped eyes, a straight, elegant nose, rosy lips, and fair, flawless skin so smooth it seemed it could be pierced by a finger—exquisitely refined, like a jade carving… Zuo Xiaoqian was speechless. If she had been a classic beauty in her previous life, then her reborn self could absolutely be described with phrases like “beauty that makes fish sink and geese fall, and makes the moon hide its face and flowers blush”… She swallowed hard, blinked, and the figure in the mirror lowered her eyelashes: “Wow, wow, wow, I hit the jackpot… such a gorgeous face…” Xiao Lian stared in disbelief as the imperial consort on the bed drooled over her reflection, thinking to herself, “Did the princess hit her head or something?” How could she be so different from the stern, unsmiling woman she was before? Zuo Xiaoqian caught Xiao Lian’s expression out of the corner of her eye and knew her behavior had aroused suspicion. Though the risk was immense—such a drastic personality shift was bound to raise eyebrows—she had made up her mind. She had no intention of becoming a cold, unsmiling ice queen like the previous owner of this body. Just as she was about to say something to dispel Xiao Lian’s doubts, a shrill voice rang out from outside the courtyard gate: “Xiao Lian, you worthless servant! Come out and fetch the meal! Are you waiting for it to be brought to you?” Hearing this, Xiao Lian immediately rushed out in a panic, her expression of fear even more intense than when facing Zuo Xiaoqian. Puzzled, Zuo Xiaoqian leaned in to listen to the commotion outside.
