Chapter 12: Check It Off

620 Words
“Hmm?” Wang Ruo replied in a seemingly casual tone, yet the gentle, serene expression on his face remained unchanged. “Is there something you’d like to ask of me, Xiao Qian?” Zuo Xiao Qian’s dazed gaze remained fixed on Wang Ruo’s face. No matter how she looked at him, she simply couldn’t get enough of this young man! Such strikingly beautiful features, such exquisite and elegant bearing… Such beauty—the more she looked, the more she loved it. Such an aura—no matter how she looked at him, he didn’t seem the least bit like a spoiled rich kid! “Xiao Qian?” Wang Ruo’s concerned voice rang out, and he leaned forward slightly. “Are you spacing out?” The sudden proximity of that beauty made Zuo Xiaoqian start in surprise, then he forced a silly grin to cover his momentary lapse: “Oh, heh heh, I was just thinking…” “Thinking about what?” Wang Ruo raised an eyebrow ever so slightly, her tone still gentle and unhurried: “You mentioned earlier that you had an unreasonable request. What kind of request is it?” Only then did Zuo Xiaoqian remember why she’d come out in the first place, and she quickly gathered her composure: “Do you have a way to get me out of here?” Wang Ruo’s delicate eyebrows knitted into a puzzled arch: “Get you out? I don’t understand what you mean, Xiaoqian—” The implication was clear: she wanted Zuo Xiaoqian to explain herself more clearly! Zuo Xiaoqian, of course, picked up on this: “Although I’m a maid in the Wang mansion, staying in this place—which makes me feel uncomfortable, repulsed, and disgusted—could easily make me sick, right? So I was wondering if you could take me out of the mansion for a walk?” She had originally intended to ask him to simply take her away right then and there, but upon reflection, she realized she couldn’t rush things; she had to proceed slowly, one step at a time… “That request is certainly not unreasonable!” Wang Ruo’s tightly furrowed brows relaxed. Seeing the pure, dazzling light in Zuo Xiaoqian’s eyes at his words, he curved his lips into a gentle smile: “It’s just—” What kind of maid would dare to tell a stranger, right here in her master’s mansion, that she hated and resented certain aspects of the place? How could she lack even that much self-awareness? “Just?” Upon hearing those two words, Zuo Xiaoqian’s eyes widened in alarm, her gaze almost predatory. “Just what?” “Although Wang Ruo is a friend of the Prince, you are a maid in this mansion. I simply cannot take it upon myself to take you out…” Wang Ruo said, looking at Zuo Xiaoqian’s animated expression with a troubled expression. Zuo Xiaoqian slumped her shoulders and dejectedly tossed the chicken wing she was holding aside. “But you don’t have to be this disappointed!” Wang Ruo consoled her. “It won’t work this time, but next time I’ll definitely take you out for a walk, okay?” “Really?” Zuo Xiaoqian’s eyes, which had been dull, immediately lit up again. As if afraid the other person might change their mind, she hurriedly held out her little finger: “Come on, let’s make a promise—” Wang Ru’s gaze drifted downward to Zuo Xiaoqian’s small hand, still smudged with grease. Her long eyelashes drooped slightly, casting a faint shadow over her slender, beautiful almond-shaped eyes. She slowly extended her fair, beautiful hand and hooked her little finger around the one waiting.
