"How was your check-up on your legs?" Tom asked when he entered my room. I let him come because I wanted to know the results of what I had asked him to take care of.
"My legs are better now than before. Next month I can undergo surgery," I replied to him. I asked him to sit on the edge of my bed because I was also in bed, leaning against the headboard.
"I heard that your ex-girlfriend Nissi is the nurse taking care of you when you go to the hospital," he commented with a teasing smile. Nissi was my ex-girlfriend. Our breakup was just fine, so we treated each other well when we met. We were both civil to each other.
"Maybe there's still a second chance for the two of you? And what if she's really the person destined to be your forever?" He gave me a meaningful smile.
I know what's running through Tom's mind. But if he's thinking that there's still a chance for Nissi and me to get back together, he's mistaken. That woman was just a part of my past life.
"Stop your crazy thoughts, Tom. The two of us can't get back together," I said to him with a serious face. "By the way, that's not the reason I asked you to come here. How is your investigation about the thing I asked you?"
Instead of answering my question right away, Tom stood up and walked to the door. He opened the door and made sure there was no one else near my room. After closing it again, he locked it and returned to sit on the edge of my bed.
"This is the information I gathered. Although I'm not yet sure if Rina is involved in the ambush against you, I am certain that her older sister Raina did not kill your mother," Tom said seriously. Then he handed me a white folder containing the information he had gathered during his investigation.
I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists tightly after reading Tom's report. According to the report I read, Raina was just at home the night my mother was found lifeless in her car. She did not leave the house after being driven away by my mother when she attempted to visit me in my room while I was confined in the hospital and still unconscious.
Tom also showed me the CCTV footage taken inside Greg's unit. There is a CCTV camera facing the door of Greg's unit, and because Raina did not close the door when she entered, the camera captured the entire incident. The camera showed Raina struggling when her ex-boyfriend suddenly hugged her. And just as my wife was about to push him away, my mother arrived and thought that they were hugging each other.
It wasn't an accident that my mom went to that condo. Someone lured my mom into that place to see Greg hugging Raina. So that my mom would think badly of Raina and get angry.
"Someone set up my wife. And who would benefit if my mom and I got angry because of the thought that Raina was betraying me?" I looked at Tom. I'm sure we both have the same people in mind who might be behind the setup that happened.
"It was Greg and Rina. The two of them conspired against Raina," said Tom before shaking his head. "I can't believe Rina's hatred for her older sister is so intense that she would set her up." Who knows, maybe Rina had something to do with your mom's death."
I just tightened my grip on my fists. If she is also involved in my mom's death, I promise she will rot in prison.
"Rina was spoiled and a b***h. She wanted to get everything she liked, including me. She couldn't allow her sister to be happy. And didn't she also think that Raina intentionally ran over their mother with a car? That's why the hatred she felt for her half-sister intensified even more." I took a deep breath to lighten my heavy chest. "We need to find my Mom's driver-bodyguard immediately. He is the only one who can tell what really happened."
After my Mom died, Edgar, my Mom's driver-bodyguard whom I hired from Tom's security agency, disappeared like a bubble. I don't believe he would just leave my Mom and save himself. Everyone working at my friend's agency is brave. They are trained to protect their employees even at the cost of their lives.
If only I had thought of these things before and not let my anger get the best of me, Raina and I wouldn't be in this situation. But it's not just the issue with my mom that's the problem. I can't walk. My feet are tied to a wheelchair so I can't protect her. And kicking her out of my house was my way of protecting her. But it turned out to be a big mistake. Because it only put Raina's life in more danger.
"Rina was cruel and crazy. Surely, if she notices that we know something about what she and Greg did, she might do more than just that," Tom commented, shaking his head again. "Don't worry about Edgar. I'll do everything to let my men find him as soon as possible. By the way, it's good that Dave is back at work. I feel more at ease when he's your bodyguard, especially since I am not around anymore."
"Evo? Why is the door locked? Who's with you inside? What are you doing?"
Tom and I looked at each other when we heard Rina's loud voice followed by a knock on the door.
"Don't alert the snake," I reminded Tom. He just nodded and then went to the door to open it for Rina.
"What's the matter? Why are you locking the door, Evo?" Rina angrily asked me when she got inside. Tom discreetly picked up the folder I had placed beside me.
I was irritated by the way Rina spoke as if I didn't have the right to lock my room in my own house.
"Why? Am I not allowed to lock the door in my room? You might be forgetting that this is my house, Rina?" I retorted to her. I really don't like her acting like she is my wife.
"I'm sorry. I was just worried about you. I didn't know that it was Tom who was with you in your room," Rina apologized when she realized her inappropriate behavior.
"I have to go, Evo. I still have work to attend to," Tom said goodbye. I just nodded at him in response.
"What are you carrying, Tom?" Rina focused her gaze on the folder my friend was holding. Tina was about to grab it, but my friend quickly stepped back.
"What's the matter with you, Rina? Does everything in this house need to be known by you? You're not my friend's wife. You just saved him once, okay? But that doesn't mean you have the right to interfere with all the actions and things around Evo," my friend couldn't help but express intense irritation at Rina's behavior.
"Calm down, Tom. Rina is just asking. She's just curious about what you're carrying. Just show it to her. It's nothing." I pretended to side with Rina. I'm worried she might notice that Tom and I are hiding something from her.
"The contents of this folder are confidential from my agency, Rina. Are you sure you want to see it?" my friend challenged Rina while handing the folder to her. "But make sure you can handle the consequences when you see the confidential details of my agency."
Rina swallowed three times, so I am certain that she wouldn't have the courage to insist on seeing the contents of the folder. When Rina shook her head like a scared cat, my friend immediately left my room without a word.
I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. If Rina had been brave enough to look at the contents of the folder, our pretense would surely have come to an end.
