Chapter Twelve One could sense the subtle difference in Rahn’s attitude towards his Queen. He became warier; the wily old gut fighter falling back on his instinctive caution. He watched her…and he waited. An experienced observer could see the difference, when they sat enthroned before the court. There they sat, proudly erect in all their splendid majesty, eyes forward, properly oblivious the common courtiers around them. But just occasionally, Rahn would glance out of the corner of his eye to study his consort, as if taking her measure for the first time. If she felt that appraising gaze, Lohr seemed to take no notice of it. She remained, cool and imperturbable, the regal Queen secure in her throne, supremely confident; a woman content in her place at the side of her most revered monarch.
