CHAPTER 10: A KINGDOM IN THE SHADOWS

1137 Words
Victor paced in the dimly lit confines of his office, his mind spinning with a thousand calculations. The deal with Rocco had been a necessary one—his loyalty, begrudging as it was, would stabilize the DeLuca family for now. But there was no illusion of trust. Power was the only currency that mattered, and it was a currency that Victor had been collecting, in one form or another, since he stepped into this world. It wasn’t just Rocco he had to worry about. The Bianchis were an immediate threat, no matter how much time they had to prepare. Giovanni Bianchi was a man who had been scheming for years, waiting for an opportunity to seize control. The death of Salvatore had given him the opening he’d been waiting for, but Victor would not allow him to move so freely. His phone buzzed on the desk, pulling him from his thoughts. He glanced at the screen and saw Isabella’s name. Without hesitation, he answered. “What is it?” His voice was sharp, his mind still focused on the Bianchis. “We need to talk,” Isabella’s voice came through the phone, smooth and calculated. “About the Bianchis. They’re making their move, and we need to respond. But there’s something else. Something you need to hear.” Victor’s grip on the phone tightened. “What is it?” There was a pause, followed by the sound of Isabella taking a breath. “I’ve been hearing rumors. Inside sources. Someone in our ranks is leaking information. They’ve been in contact with the Bianchis.” Victor’s jaw tightened, a cold fury beginning to rise in him. “Who?” “I don’t know yet,” Isabella replied, her voice colder now. “But it’s someone close to us. Someone you trust.” The room suddenly felt smaller, the air thicker. Victor knew that if someone in his inner circle was betraying him, it meant that the war with the Bianchis had already begun—on more fronts than one. “I need names, Isabella. Now,” he demanded, his voice low and dangerous. “I’m working on it. But I’m not sure how far this runs,” she warned. “We might be dealing with a mole at the highest level.” Victor’s thoughts raced as he processed her words. A traitor. It was almost worse than facing the Bianchis themselves. A traitor could destroy everything, tear the family apart from within, and the Bianchis wouldn’t even need to lift a finger. “I’ll handle it,” he said, the calmness of his tone betraying the violence brewing beneath. “You find out who’s behind this, and make sure they don’t get away.” He hung up, the weight of what had to come next settling over him like a shroud. --- That evening, Victor held a closed-door meeting with his most trusted men. Luca, Rocco, and a few of his other lieutenants filled the room, their expressions somber as they awaited his orders. The tension was palpable. Even the hardened enforcers who had seen blood spilled a hundred times felt it. Victor didn’t waste time. “The Bianchis have been preparing for war. Giovanni is trying to move in on our territory. We can’t let that happen.” Luca nodded grimly. “We’ve been keeping an eye on their movements. They’re biding their time, but it’s clear they want something.” Victor’s gaze sharpened. “They don’t just want something, Luca. They want everything. And we’re going to stop them before they think they can make a move.” He turned to Rocco, whose silence spoke volumes. “Rocco, I need you to ensure that the soldiers are ready. We’re going to send a message. Giovanni needs to know that we won’t be pushed around. And this time, it’s not just business. It’s personal.” Rocco’s lips curled into a thin smile, the kind that Victor had grown to recognize as a sign of agreement. Rocco was an old war dog, one who understood the need for ruthless action. “Understood,” Rocco muttered, his eyes glinting with a quiet anticipation for the bloodshed to come. Victor turned back to the group, his voice steady. “We move tonight. A strike at the heart of their operation—show them we’re in charge. I’ll leave the specifics to Luca.” Luca gave a brief nod and stood. “We’ll hit them where it hurts. No more waiting.” Victor’s eyes narrowed as he surveyed the room, his gaze lingering on each man. “There’s one more thing. We’ve got a traitor in our midst.” The room went still. Victor could see the confusion flicker across their faces. The idea of a traitor within the DeLuca family was almost unthinkable. But there it was, staring them in the face. Luca spoke first. “A rat? Who?” “I don’t know yet,” Victor said, his voice cold. “But I’ve heard rumors. There’s someone working with the Bianchis. It could be anyone. It could be someone you trust.” Rocco’s expression hardened, his eyes narrowing. “I’ve got no patience for rats. If it’s one of ours, they won’t survive.” Victor’s gaze flickered to Rocco before moving to the others. “The Bianchis know too much. And it’s not just Giovanni who’s a threat. It’s the rot inside our own family. We need to find them, and we need to find them fast.” Luca clenched his jaw. “You want us to run a clean sweep?” Victor nodded. “Exactly. No one gets away. Not this time.” --- That night, the streets of the city ran red with the violence Victor had set in motion. His men moved like shadows, striking against the Bianchis’ operations with brutal efficiency. The message was clear—Victor DeLuca was no longer just a player in this game. He was the game. Meanwhile, Isabella continued her search for the mole. Her contacts worked in the dark, but no one could move fast enough to match the mounting pressure. Victor was right; this was not just a war for power—it was a war for the very survival of the DeLuca family. --- Hours later, when the smoke of the attack had settled and the night air hung heavy with the scent of gunpowder and blood, Victor found himself back in his office, staring out the window at the city below. The Bianchis would retaliate. It was inevitable. But as the leader of this empire, he knew one thing for sure—the king never waited for his enemies to make the first move. The King of Shadows was born in the dark, and in the dark, he would reign. --- End of Chapter 10 ---
