Chapter 6

I was unpacking my things and putting them in the right places. As I did, I thought about the time Jacob and I arrived together at the adoption center. We were also unpacking our stuff back then, and I remembered him saying: “Sometimes we forget what we have until we unpack it. Then we put it somewhere and forget about it again. That’s why you should keep your important things in front of you—so you never lose sight of them.” After two hours, I was finally done. The only thing I couldn’t find was a photo—it was missing. I searched everywhere, but no luck. Maybe I hadn’t checked properly. “Hope!!!” “Yes?” I answered. “Would you like to come with me downstairs to grab something to eat?” Luis asked. Luis was my roommate, in case I hadn’t mentioned that before. “Yeah, sure, just let me grab my phone.” “No worries, darling.” “Okay, we can go.” We went down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. After grabbing our food, we looked around for a table. As we walked to find a seat, someone suddenly pushed me, and all my food fell to the ground. I turned around—once again, it was the brunette guy. This time, I was really pissed. “What the hell is wrong with you? Can’t you watch where you’re going?” I snapped at him. “It’s your fault. You’re not important enough to be noticed,” he replied mockingly. Without thinking, I punched him in the face. “Well then, I guess it’s not important when I do this.” I turned around to walk back to my room, but suddenly, he grabbed me roughly by the arm. His grip was tight and painful. “You…” “Stop, Taylor. Let go of her hand.” “f**k off, Eli. It’s none of your business.” “I said stop.” Taylor finally let go of my hand. “Go to hell, Eli,” he muttered before storming out of the room. Eli turned to me. “Everything okay? Hope, right?” “Yeah, that’s right. And yeah, don’t worry,” I replied. “Don’t mind him. He’s a good guy, he just has a temper sometimes.” “Yeah, I get it. But anyway, thanks. You didn’t have to—” “No, it’s okay. It was wrong,” he interrupted. “Anyway, have a good night. And don’t worry about it,” he said with a small smile. “You too, Eli. Can I call you that?” “Yeah, you can. Bye.” “Bye.” And with that, we left.
