PART FIVE: PRESSURE POINTS

741 Words
Morgan didn’t move toward the door. That alone told Lucia everything she needed to know. The knock came again—measured, patient. Whoever stood outside wasn’t nervous. They were confident. That was worse. “Lucia Alvarez,” the voice repeated. “We know you’re inside.” Lucia’s heart hammered, but her mind sharpened. Fear had never been her weakness. Surprise had been. She stepped closer to Morgan, her voice barely a whisper. “There’s a service corridor behind the bathroom. Most people don’t notice it.” Morgan’s eyes flicked to the door, then back to her. “You’ve planned this.” “I had to.” Another knock—harder now. “Last chance,” the voice warned. Morgan nodded once. Decision made. “Go,” he murmured. “I’ll buy you time.” “No,” Lucia said immediately. “I’m not leaving you.” Something unreadable crossed his face—then admiration, sharp and dangerous. “Then stay close,” he said. “And do exactly what I say.” He moved fast, quiet, locking the bathroom door, pulling the mirror aside to reveal the narrow passage Lucia had mentioned. He glanced at her again, eyes intense. “You trust me?” She didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” That surprised them both. The door to the room rattled as the lock was tested. Morgan guided Lucia into the corridor, his hand firm at her lower back, heat and reassurance radiating from the contact. The space was tight, forcing them close—breath to breath, heart to heart. Lucia was acutely aware of him now: his strength, his focus, the way his presence wrapped around her like armor. Fear twisted into something sharper, almost intoxicating. They moved quickly, silently, emerging into a stairwell just as the sound of the hotel door giving way echoed behind them. Morgan didn’t look back. They descended fast, footsteps muffled, adrenaline thrumming. Lucia’s mind raced—escape routes, contingencies—but part of her kept circling back to one unavoidable truth: Morgan was not reacting like a civilian. They burst out into the night, cool air slapping Lucia’s face. The city was alive—cars, voices, lights—cover enough to disappear if they moved right. They didn’t stop running until they were three blocks away, breathless in the shadow of a closed storefront. Morgan braced one hand against the wall, the other still gripping Lucia’s wrist. Only then did he look at her. “You okay?” She nodded, chest heaving. “You knew exactly what to do.” He studied her for a long moment, then released her slowly, deliberately. “So did you,” he said. Silence settled, thick with everything they weren’t saying. Lucia leaned back against the wall, suddenly aware of how close they were again, how the danger had stripped away hesitation and left only truth. “You’re not just a traveler,” she said softly. Morgan smiled faintly. “No.” “And you’re not surprised I figured that out.” “No.” Lucia laughed once, breathless. “We’re both liars.” “Selective ones,” he corrected. She stepped closer without thinking. The streetlight caught his face, highlighting the intensity she’d sensed since the plane. She could feel the pull between them again—stronger now, sharpened by danger, by trust forged under pressure. “You didn’t have to stay,” she said. “I wanted to,” he replied. The words landed heavier than a promise. For a moment, the world narrowed to just them—the city fading, the threat temporarily distant. Morgan’s hand came up, hesitated, then rested at her waist. The contact sent a slow, undeniable heat through her. Lucia tilted her head slightly, a silent question. Morgan answered by closing the distance. The kiss this time was deeper, more urgent—not rushed, but charged with everything they’d just survived. Lucia felt it everywhere: the steadiness of his hands, the restraint barely holding, the knowledge that this was not an escape but a choice. They broke apart reluctantly. “We can’t go back,” Lucia said. “I know.” “And this doesn’t end tonight.” “I know that too.” She looked at him, eyes steady now. “Then we move forward.” Morgan nodded. “Together.” Somewhere behind them, a car door slammed. The chase wasn’t over. But neither was what had started on that plane.
