Moving with the speed of angels who are not tethered to the restrictions of time and space, Nameless arrives at the Hall of Justice to stand before the Elders and beseech them to intervene in Billie Nickerson"s Life Chart.
“She must not enter the Holding Place where her Dark Side taunts her with human guilt feelings. I thought she would be strong enough to resist, or that my guidance would be enough for her to choose the light of the Other Side. But she wavers. Apparently I have failed.”
“There is no failure upon you,” one of the Elders says. “As with all souls Billie Nickerson has the freedom to choose which path she will take, even in the hereafter, even if it means succumbing to the evil that would destroy her.”
“But please, look at her Chart. It is imperative that she choose rightly, for it has been written that she is to inspire her son to heroic achievements.”
“It looks as though she has taught him well. She has been an inspiration. Now he is on his own.”
“But,” Nameless insists, “Billie fights this notion. She still holds to some of her earthly sentiments. That her son declared he would hate her if she died has put an enormous burden on her soul. She is tormented with misgivings about her purpose from here on.”
“What is your wish?” the Elder inquires.
“For an emergency intervention. Show the love and compassion, the wisdom for which you are revered.”
The Elders deliberate the situation quietly, dispassionately, for theirs in not a governing body. They make no laws or decrees, and they rarely interfere in a soul"s journey.
“We have decided, in Billie Nickerson"s best interests, to have her appear before us and make her case. It seems she has died before her time. She was not meant to be here so soon.”
“A mistake?” Nameless has known this to happen, but wonders how she could have missed it. She is admired for her careful attention to the most minute detail when a soul is on the brink of death. “Then it would be merciful to intervene. She must be shown a way to be at peace with her premature decision to die.”
“We are not so sure it was her own decision.”
Nameless is shocked to hear this. How could someone else interfere with Billie"s fate? What kind of influence would this other being have over her to make her die before her time?
Nameless ruminates over the circumstances of Billie"s impending demise following her accident, and the scenario looms large as surgeons work feverishly to repair a ruptured blood vessel next to Billie"s heart…
“She"s going down!”
Don"t fight it Billie. I am here with you. Just let go.”
Don"t fight it Billie. I am here with you. Just let go.”“Stop compressions… Check pulse…” There is none.
That"s it, dear. Just a few more seconds now and we can walk your path together.
That"s it, dear. Just a few more seconds now and we can walk your path together.“Charge paddles to 300… Clear!” Repeated electric shocks fail to revive Billie and she flatlines. Reluctantly, the doctors accept they can do no more to save her life.
“Want to call it?”
“Time of death 17:40.”
“Wait, wait!” The pulse on the monitor is weak but measurable. One doctor checks her eye response while the other checks Billie"s respiration.
“No response in the pupils. No brain activity.”
“No breath sounds.”
“Yet the monitor shows a pulse.” The doctor places his stethoscope on Billie"s chest. “It"s erratic and faint. It"s not possible. But let"s intubate and maybe…”
Don"t hesitate, Billie. Your time on this earth is done.
Don"t hesitate, Billie. Your time on this earth is done.No. Wait. I"m afraid. I don"t want to leave yet.
No. Wait. I"m afraid. I don"t want to leave yet.I know. But remember this is what you wanted. And it"s my task to make your transition easy, to take you where you are meant to reside for eternity…
I know. But remember this is what you wanted. And it"s my task to make your transition easy, to take you where you are meant to reside for eternity…Nameless is devastated. As Billie"s guide it was she who coaxed her to let go of her mortality. Billie didn"t want to leave. In that moment she had changed her mind, but Nameless was unwavering in her belief that this was Billie"s time to die.
She recalled how Billie"s son David was angry and distraught that his mother did not try harder to live.
“Mom,” he had whispered. “I know you"re in there. I know you can hear me. Come back to us. Just try harder. I know you can do it. You taught me everything I know - music, sign language - you taught me to never give up no matter what. Please, please. Don"t give up now.”
He grabbed his mother"s hand desperately.
“No! Mom, if you die I"ll hate you forever! I"ll never forgive you for leaving me!”
You didn"t tell me he would hate me! Please bring me back so I can explain!
You didn"t tell me he would hate me! Please bring me back so I can explain! It"s too late, Billie. We can"t bring you back. This was the deal. Your life for David"s soul, for his gifts to the world.
It"s too late, Billie. We can"t bring you back. This was the deal. Your life for David"s soul, for his gifts to the world.“It"s too late,” Nameless had said. It was she, Billie"s guide, the one spirit who was to act in Billie"s best interest in life and in the afterlife, who had taken the decision to live or die out of her hands.
sheThe Elders now understand, but without judgement on Nameless who will render judgement upon herself.
“Billie"s Chart also has delineated that she has many lessons to learn in many other lifetimes before she can be ready to inspire the heart of her son again.”
“And as for my role?” Nameless asks, intuitively knowing the answer. “I will step aside. She will be in your charge from this moment on.”
Hearing the news that it was a mistake for her to die so soon, Billie implores the Council to allow her to go back, even if it is in a different body as someone her family doesn"t know. Just for the chance to correct her mistakes and guide her son"s path.
“There are many life lessons that must be cleared away first,” she is told. “This is the only way to correct your mistakes.”
“How long? How many lifetimes?”
“Time does not exist to a spirit soul. Past, Present and Future are all one dimension,” the Elder reminds her. “When you learn this, your other incarnations will pass in a blink. Resist, and the moments will expand into eons.”
“I don"t know any other life but my own. I wouldn"t know how to act, what to believe or what to do.”
“Well, that is the point, is it not?” The Elders laugh not cruelly but at the irony that all newly-deceased fall prey to.
isWilling to bear uncertainty, pain and agony in lives not of her choosing or liking, but believing the experiences will bring her closer to her son, Billie resigns herself to an unknown number of reincarnations.
