Chapter 3
Uri Kingdom
"I, Alpha Mellan, reject you as my mate." With trembling voice and hands, he had to make the most difficult declaration of his life. Rejecting his Mate, the one werewolf who was meant to be his other half. This felt like a knife piercing into his heart.
Her wolf purred as she blinked rapidly at him, watching as his jaws clenched, and his eyes bore a glint of something she surmised was pain as he tried to draw out the words that would hurt them and plague them for as long as he feared to admit.
With a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes, he watched as his mate's face fell, her eyes filled with heartbreak.
The Uri Kingdom is an ancient secret underworld and a mysterious place where special creatures which are unknown to the human world live. These creatures are called werewolves.
Azariah, the Luna of the Uri Kingdom watched her Mate, a man she loves and cares for deeply, make a declaration that brought tears to her eyes and her heart heavy. His words cut through her heart as she stood numb, wondering if this was the man who had stolen her heart. If this was the man she had loved all her life, he couldn't be. Something must have dazed him.
Although it took Alpha Mellan a nerve of steel to get the words out, and his tongue got tied, and the words were trapped within him when he looked into her dreadful eyes. But he knew somewhere in his soul it was the right thing to do, even though his heart said otherwise.
Being with his Luna Azariah was at the expense of his howls; the pack would be in danger if the right thing was not done.
But then, why did it take them twenty years to realize that their lovely Luna, Azariah, was not the right wolf for that position?
She is loved by her pack, and whenever the pups are around her, they usually feel safe. Generosity was her watchword; she protected other female wolves like they were her sisters or related to her; she was good at everything.
Azariah could not believe this was truly happening. How can she possibly adapt from being the Luna for years to a regular werewolf overnight? She needed answers, but she found none. Nobody was there to make her understand how possible this could be.
It's obvious this hurt the Alpha too, but he had no choice; he could not explain what was going on. He just stood there, staring at her with tears slowly dropping from his eyes.
As Alpha Mellan pondered the situation, he could not help but question everything he had believed about his mate. She possessed all the qualities of a Luna; she was fierce, brave, and strong.
She had even completed the final ritual, but still, the pack remained unchanged, and the fertile-enhancing chant did not manifest. It was a tough nut to c***k. This decision stood out as number one on the mile-long list of hard decisions he had ever made in his life.
He had no idea how this happened; he wondered why he was not given a premonition, a sign, or anything from the goddess that a day like this was ever going to come. He loved her more than he had ever loved anyone. But he had his duties, and as a ruler, he must fulfill the needs of the pack members over his own.
Even though it cost him his peace. Even though it means never being happy again.
None of the wolves could explain what was going on; they all stood there with their mouths full of shock and amazement. Azariah is their Luna, and they all know that, so what is going on?
Could it be that, for the first time in history, the prophecy was wrong? Did the gods somehow have some exceptions that their ancestors had refused to tell them? What exactly would have been the issue?
These were the thoughts and groaning that could be heard among all the wolves because they had a lot of “why's” that needed answers.
They all hopped on their Alpha to come to their rescue; they needed an explanation. He cannot just reject his mate like she is nothing, no!
He has to do something about it; he is the Alpha after all, and he has the power to change and adjust any law in the land. Alpha Mellan thought to himself as he witnessed the reaction of his mate and his people.
“I accept...” Luna Azariah was about to acknowledge her fate when a voice interrupted her.
“Wait!”
The werewolves all froze, their attention now focused on the Alpha, as he abruptly interrupted Luna's acceptance of the rejection. There was a sense of anticipation in the air as they all wondered what the Alpha would say next. His voice was calm but authoritative, and they knew that whatever he had to say would be important. They all waited with bated breath, not daring to move a muscle.
“Wait, do not accept the rejection yet; I believe there must be a way out.” He breathed heavily in between words as he spoke.
The pack could easily tell how unhappy and troubled their Alpha was by the situation. They all understood his plight, because they all knew how good their Luna was; she was special.
But still, their howl echoed as they wondered why the Alpha decided to change his mind at the dying minute. The murmuring of people flies around.
"As the Alpha, I have the right to adjust the laws as I see fit. This is not something that I take lightly, but I believe it is necessary in this case. The old laws are no longer serving our pack in the way that they should.” He sighed before continuing. The air was as silent as a graveyard.
“As your leader, I must ensure that our pack is protected and thriving, and I believe that the new laws will help us to achieve this. However, I understand that change can be difficult, and I will be open to feedback and suggestions from all of you. I value your input and want to ensure that we are all on the same page. Thank you.”
"Yes, we understand. We agree." The howls rose from the crowd, like a chorus of affirmation.
The Alpha stood tall, his shoulders squared, and his head held high. He was the leader of this pack, and he would not let them down. He was determined to do what was best for all of them, even if it meant making difficult decisions. With the howls of the pack behind him, he knew he was making the right decision and on the right path.
“Where is the seer?” He continued as he paced around and moved his eyes as if he were searching for something.
“Where is he?” he asked again.
“Here I am, my Alpha,” a croaking voice echoed from the crowd.
