I Will Fight

Chapter 4 The seer was a relic of the past, a living reminder of the pack's history. His age was evident in every aspect of his appearance, from his hunched back to his slow, shuffling gait. His voice was rough and raspy, like the pages of an old book, and his teeth were brown with age. The wolves watched him with a mixture of curiosity and respect. He may have been old, but he was wise, and his knowledge was invaluable to the pack. “Step forward, please." Alpha Mellan ordered with respect. With a wobbly gait, the seer slowly stepped forward, his head held high despite his weakened body. As he approached the Alpha, he could feel the eyes of the pack upon him, and he knew that they were waiting for him to speak. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves that fluttered in his stomach. Finally, he looked up at the Alpha and began to listen. “I want my Luna to try the Fertile-enhancing chant again,” he said, as he sternly looked at the old wolf, hoping for a positive response. The seer's eyes widened in surprise at Alpha's request. The fertility-enhancing chant was a dangerous ritual that required great strength and skill to perform. It was rarely used, as it could have disastrous consequences if not executed correctly. The seer's throat felt dry as he considered the request. He knew that the Luna was strong, but was she strong enough for that? Is she the right wolf for this? Everyone knew the law; only a true Luna could perform this ritual, and Azariah had already failed in three different attempts. And as per tradition, three attempts are all that is required, or it could be disastrous. The seer looked at the Alpha, trying to read his thoughts, but the Alpha's face was unreadable. “Okay, Alpha,” the seer answered as he made moves to sit and prepare a charm. The seer chanted out incantations several times which echoed through the air like a lost soul crying for help. With a discouraged and disappointed look, he nodded his head in disapproval. “Talk to me; what is going on? What is with that look?” Alpha Mellan asked nervously, his fear evident. The seer hesitated, knowing that what he had to say would not be pleasant to the ear. He had to choose his words carefully, or he would only anger the Alpha further. Finally, he took a deep breath and spoke. "It is the Fertile-enhancing chant, Alpha. It will not work with the Luna. I am sorry to say this, but it is the truth." The seer looked up at the Alpha, waiting for his reaction before he continued. “For you to be able to adjust any ancient law, there must be a truce, and to achieve this truce, there must be a battle challenge with the Omega.” Meanwhile, the seer knew there was no certainty that the Fertile-enhancing chant would work if the challenge was won, because the mystery behind this Fertile-enhancing ritual is ancient and mysterious. “What? The Omega? Why the Omega? You are telling me that the only way to change the law is by battling the Omega?" The Alpha questioned, his voice filled with skepticism and distress. The seer's words left him reeling, and he struggled to comprehend what he was hearing. "Is there no other option? Surely there must be another way to solve this problem without having to go to such extremes." He looked at the seer with an expression of disbelief and despair, hoping that he had misunderstood the situation. "The chant told me that to adjust the law, you must first defeat the Omega in a battle." The seer repeated, his voice betraying a hint of weariness. "But even if you win, there is no guarantee that you will be able to change the law. The mystery behind the Fertile-enhancing chant is something I cannot yet understand." As he spoke, his words were heavy with a sense of frustration, as if the task ahead of him was nearly impossible to complete. Whereas, Nathan, the Omega, was not only the Alpha's childhood friend; he was like a brother to him. They had grown up together, shared meals and adventures, and confided in each other with the intimacy of siblings. To the outside world, they may have seemed like two individuals, but to those who knew them well, it was clear that they were connected by something far deeper than mere friendship. Their bond was unbreakable, which came to be with years of shared experiences and trust. Does that even capture the depth of their relationship? The Alpha thought. "Is it worth it to risk losing my brother just for the chance of increasing the fertility of the land?" He continued to wonder aloud. His mind was full of doubt and uncertainty as he struggled to accept the terms of the chant. He loved Nathan like a brother, and the thought of putting him in danger was almost unbearable. But the possibility of fertile land was so tantalizing that it was hard to ignore, and he wasn't ready to let go of Azariah, his Luna. He was in a dilemma with no easy way out. “Don't worry, I will just accept your rejection. Don’t beat yourself about if it is worth it or not." With a trembling voice, Luna asked. "The Omega is your brother, no matter what. If something were to happen to him, even if the fertile-enhancing chant were to work, you would regret it for the rest of your life. Your happiness and fulfillment would be incomplete, no matter how much land we had or how prosperous we became. Family is more important than anything else, and you know that deep down." She continued. Despite Luna's compelling argument, Alpha Mellan was not ready to give up. He was determined to find a way to make the fertility-enhancing chant work without risking his brother's and friend’s lives or their relationship. He would not rest until he had found a solution that would satisfy both his need for fertile land and his desire to keep his family whole. He could not give up now, no matter how difficult it seemed. Mellan continues to struggle with his thoughts before he is interrupted. “I will fight!” The crowd went silent as the Omega's confident voice rang out, cutting through the tension like a knife. "I will fight," he repeated, his tone now more firm and determined. "I will not let my brother risk his life or his happiness for the sake of this land. I will do whatever it takes to ensure that this fertile-enhancing chant succeeds without any loss of life or love." Nathan’s eyes met with Mellan, communicating with him with his look in a way that only they both understood.
