Chapter 15: The Slowest Wolf Ever!

1835 Words
*Maverick Horwood* As I stepped into the warm embrace of the forest, the air thick with the scents of pine and damp earth, my mind swirled with the chaos of the past few days. Demi walked beside me, her presence a grounding force in my turbulent world. She was everything I'd never realized I needed—fragile yet brave, innocent yet filled with a fire that urged me to be more than just an Alpha. The clearing opened up before us, dappled sunlight pooling among the foliage, and I stopped to take a breath. It felt like a sanctuary. Stepping further inside, I felt the weight of the pack's eyes on us, curious, skeptical. They didn't trust her yet. A low growl of frustration bubbled within me, spurring my fingers to move. As I linked to my pack, the urgency of my command sliced through the silence. 'Do not go near the western part of the forest, near the Black Mountains caves. Stay away. This is a warning from your Alpha.' Parker. I could almost hear his smug voice weaving through the minds of my pack. His insidious whispers behind my back had painted Demi as an interloper, a mere distraction. It stung me more than I wanted to admit, the bitterness of his slander. I had made my choice. She was mine—my Luna. And I'd fight tooth and claw to ensure they understood that. My thoughts seeped into heated recollections of today's morning training session, where I had confronted Parker. I hadn't just defended Demi; I had unleashed the fury of a protective mate. He had sneered, throwing one of his typical jabs about my judgment, about how a human could never command our respect. The oppressive urge to transform, to growl at him, had been hard to contain. But as I had roared my own truth back at him, watching him flinch as I asserted my claim over Demi, it had felt empowering. "Demi," I said, glancing sideways at her, feeling the weight of my growl simmer beneath the surface. "I know when I offered you the week in my pack, I spoke about checking if you could handle my pack or me, but now I don't want you just to check it. I want you to stay, to become mine and this pack's Luna. I know they might not see your strength now, but I'll make them understand." I softened my voice, catching the flush of her cheeks. "Parker isn't against you. He's just dealing with something else. It's more than just you. You have to believe that." "I know," she replied softly, though the uncertainty lingered in her eyes. How could I shield her from the storm that sometimes lingered among the pack, plotting how to place blame and doubt? The internal war was tumultuous. I had to rein in my temper, no matter how Parker stirred it. I couldn't allow him to disrupt the fragile peace we were attempting to cultivate. As I began to free myself of my clothing, revealing the scars that adorned my skin—each one a mark of my history and power—I caught her gaze lingering on me. A bolt of heat ignited low in my stomach. Her eyes sparkled with a blend of curiosity and something raw that sent my wolf into a frenzy, eager to engage in this primal dance. "You're such a distraction," I muttered with a smirk. "Are you trying to be a bad girl, Demi?" A deep crimson bloomed across her cheeks. "Well, I didn't realize I needed permission to admire my mate," she stuttered. Her teasing tone made me want to pull her closer, to trap her in this moment forever. But I had to focus. I had a transformation to undertake. "Turn around," I asserted, and with a laugh, she complied, trusting me in my vulnerability, and I found myself alone with the merging thoughts of my nature. My internal dialogue with my wolf surged. 'She'll love us; she'll see our brilliance.' But I gripped the edges of my control. 'Don't scare her,' I warned, pushing the thoughts of grandeur aside. 'This is not the grand reveal to make her second-guess.' Reluctantly, the wolf within me conceded. Shift. I fell into the familiar, shivering ecstasy of bones reshaping, muscles stretching. My sense of smell heightened, and the vibrant colors of the world burst forth as I transformed into my wolf—a massive creature of rich brown and silver, my mismatched eyes forever captivating. Demi turned back, and my heart raced at the sight of her. I could sense her awe and hesitance, yet this time it was laced with acceptance. I took a cautious step toward her, trying to read her expression—the wondrous mix of fear and fascination only igniting the proud protector within me. It wasn't just the wolf she was gazing at; it was me—I felt it in every tremor of the air between us. I lowered my head, nuzzling against her hand in a gentle gesture of familiarity and trust, urging her to touch me, to feel what I could offer. A thread of connection wove through the trees, vibrant and electric, binding us together in this enchanted glade. She reached out hesitantly, her fingers grazing the coarse fur of my neck. A rumble emanated from my chest, a low, welcoming growl that echoed a promise. I was here—to keep her safe, to elevate her status amidst those who questioned it. But doubts nagged at me as well. Would the pack truly accept her? Would my devotion to a human woman, my Luna, shatter the bonds of loyalty I had built with them for years? A flicker of anxiety crept in, but I pushed it aside. She was worth every struggle, each lingering doubt cast by naysayers. "You're so soft!" she exclaimed, her laughter ringing through the evening air. My wolf preened at the praise, puffing out his chest, while I felt a stubborn twinge of contention. What did it matter? I was here, a guardian by her side, even if part of me was still grappling with the enormity of our bond. 'She likes me more than you,' my wolf teased, a canine grin settling across his muzzle. I could feel him beaming, basking in Demi's delight. The nerve of him! But he had a point; her bright amber eyes sparkled with joy as she scratched behind my ears, and I couldn't help but admire her spirit. She was so carefree, so unaware of my inner turmoil—the doubts of loyalty, the fears of rejection stirring within me. "Are you, like, an overgrown puppy, or what?" she giggled, her playful tone infectious. This was the way of her—able to see the creature I was and render me into something less than the beast I feared I could become. I lay down, my massive frame stretched across the grass, and showed her how to mount me, my canine instincts mixing with my human need to protect, guide, and grow closer to her. With a nervous nod, she gathered my discarded clothes, clumsily straddling my back. I felt the roughness of her grip on my fur, and while it was a little painful, I endured it, determined to show her that we belonged together. I could sense the thrill of adventure coursing through her, and it drove me to trot slowly at first, easing her into the sensation of riding a wolf. Her grip loosened, and I felt the tension ebb away from her. "You're the slowest wolf ever!" she teased, her laughter bright against the backdrop of rustling leaves. A growl rumbled deep in my chest, a playful challenge. But my wolf's instincts surged to the forefront; without warning, he took off, bounding into the forest with a rush of speed, the powerful legs propelling us forward. Demi's delighted screams mixed with squeals of joy filled my ears as we zigzagged between the trees, my heart pounding in perfect rhythm with her laughter. 'Slow down, or I'll kill you!' I shouted, the wind whipping through my fur as we raced, instinct guiding us deeper into the embrace of the woods. Bliss engulfed us both, and for that moment, nothing else mattered—just me, my wolf, and the woman who had somehow become my everything. But as we approached the caves at the foot of the mountains, a shift in the air alerted me to danger—something was off. The familiar scent of rogues, foreign and invasive, wafted through the forest like a dark omen that clung to my skin. Panic gripped me as I skidded to a halt, instincts flaring. I wanted to back off, to guide Demi away from the looming threat. Still, she was already dismounting, her curiosity leading her toward the shadows of the caves, oblivious to the storm brewing beneath the surface. 'No! Demi!' I growled, the warning laced with urgency. The wolf within me surged forward, but it wasn't about to bring harm to her; it was protecting her. In one swift motion, I nudged her away from the caves, pushing her toward the trees to steer her to safety. Her eyes widened in fear, confusion etched on her features. "What's going on, Maverick?" she asked, a tremor in her voice. I wanted so desperately to explain, to tell her the danger we faced, but my instincts were blazing against reason. 'Get back!' my wolf urged. I pushed her deeper into the woods, away from the caves and the scent of danger, my heart racing as worry clawed at my insides. 'Please, just trust me,' I said softly, fighting against the wild desperation that threatened to blur our bond further. Although she didn't hear my voice in her head, the growl and my push made her comply. I linked with the patrols, calling them to come and investigate the unwelcome intrusion. Demi hesitated for just a moment, her gaze flicking back toward the caves. "Maverick—" But I wouldn't allow her to dwell on it. I kept moving, pushing her further into the cover of the trees, where the foliage was thick, and the shadows wrapped around us like an embrace. I could feel the seething tension in my chest, my wolf growling low with frustration, protective instincts roaring as if they would drown out any fears I'd tried to bury. She finally acquiesced, her breathing evening out as she followed my lead, her trust bolstering the bond we shared. But beyond the safety of our little cocoon in the woods, I knew the rogues were out there, biding their time, and every moment felt like a ticking clock. Once I knew we were out of sight, I lay on the ground gesturing for her to mount me again, and once she was secured on my back, I ran back to the packhouse, wondering who the hell dared to trespass onto my territory.
