Chapter 4: Shadows of Hope

1108 Words
MAVERICK ~~~~~ By morning, the pack house felt almost suffocating, an unwelcome cage for the storm of frustration brewing within me. After seventeen long years of waiting, I had finally found my mate, only to lose her in just an hour. It felt like some cruel twist of fate—a prize that appeared only to be snatched away just as quickly. I had replayed the moment from the reception too many times to count—her hand slipping into mine, the bond locking in place like an iron clasp, and that flicker of fear flashing in her eyes right before she bolted. The memory clung to me like a shadow, haunting and relentless. Part of me wondered if she had fled because of my reputation—the stories that were whispered throughout the country, painting me as a beast untamed. Yet there was a darker thought nagging at the edges of my mind; what if she left because she truly saw me, unfiltered? The idea twisted in my gut like a knife, sharp and unforgiving. I gave myself exactly one minute to wallow in those thoughts, to let them churn in the depths of my mind. But I refused to let despair anchor me down. Stopping my relentless pacing, I grabbed my boots, heart racing with determination. The time for brooding was over. I needed answers, and I would find them—whatever it took. Tracking her scent through the woods only confirmed what I already suspected: Demi had left the territory by car. My thoughts whirled as I imagined the myriad of places she could be. Crescent City? Another pack? All I needed was a hint, a pathway to her. I realized the answers to my questions lay not in the woods, but deep in the packhouse, and I turned around and strode back. With each determined stride, I chose to cast aside the haunting question of my worth. I may have been scarred, but the scars bore stories—the tales of survival and endurance. The thought sparked a flicker of defiance deep inside me. My heart sank as I discovered someone must have helped her escape, and there was only one person in this house stubborn enough to act as a shield between my mate and me. Hannah. I caught her voice filtering through the half-open door of Dominic's office, sharp and defensive. "You can't just send him after her," Hannah snapped, the tension crackling in the air. "She was terrified." "And keeping them apart fixes what, exactly?" Dominic replied with a calm that contrasted sharply with Hannah's rising fury. "If she's his mate, she deserves the truth and the choice." That was enough. I pushed the door open and strode inside, fueled by a desperate need for clarity. "Tell me where she is," I said, my tone steady and free of growl or threat—just a raw plea, stripped bare. Hannah folded her arms, her posture a barrier of defiance. "And then what, Maverick? She looked at you like you were the end of the world. Do you even understand how fragile she is?" The words struck deep, and I felt the weight of her concern. Demi was human, after all—a being made of flesh and vulnerability wrapped in a strangely scented air. The bond between us was vast and powerful, but it was also a source of fear for her. The unknown that loomed ahead terrified Demi, and I needed Hannah to understand that I was not a monster in this equation. "Then I go slowly," I replied, pushing back against that protective shield. "I don't force anything. I will not corner her. I ask, and she decides. But I am not walking away from her without giving her that chance to see who I truly am." Self-loathing had become almost second nature to me. At the academy, I had watched as my friends paired off in earnest, their laughter aligned with kisses, while I faded into the background, waiting. Years passed, and I watched from a distance as relationships blossomed effortlessly for others while I remained trapped in the bonds of my own insecurities. Now, having experienced the nearly tangible bond of my mate, I felt the anguish steeped in fresh, painful confusion. Dominic studied me for a moment, likely seeing through me in a way that no one else could. He had known me for decades, and I had shared my darkest, most vulnerable moments only with him. He nodded slightly in approval, but Hannah was still on edge, prepared to lash out like a wild animal defending its territory. "One condition," she said, a deadly seriousness in her eyes. "No alpha intimidation. No manipulative bond nonsense. If she says no, you listen." I didn't hesitate. "Fine." Dominic slid a business card across the desk, and as I grabbed it, the faint scent of vanilla, sugar, and a lingering trace of something uniquely Demi's wafted through the air. As I examined the business card for Sweet Temptations Bakery's name, a soft chuckle slipped from my lips. The name fit Demi's persona perfectly. I could practically see her standing there in an apron, flour dust clouding the air, while she handed out pastries like they were secret weapons of charm. Sweet as sugar, but with a dash of mischief that made her absolutely tempting—like a sinful dessert that you knew you shouldn't indulge in but couldn't help yourself. My sweet and tempting Demi Noell had fled, but I intended to find her. I would show her that our bond was not a chain, but a bridge. "Demi deserves to see the truth," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper but firm. "I know she's afraid, but I will not let that fear dictate her choices. I want her to know she is my equal in this, not a pawn to be manipulated or controlled. She needs to understand that being my mate does not mean losing herself. I will fight for her confidence, her freedom to choose me willingly." Hannah's gaze softened slightly, the stubbornness in her posture wavering, but she still seemed too scared of my matebond. "Just be gentle with her, Maverick. She's been through enough." "I promise," I replied, my heart racing with determination. This time, I would make sure she had a reason to stay. I would tread carefully, giving her the space she needed to discover who I really was beyond the alpha title and scars. It was time for Demi to see that our bond could be a sanctuary, one where she felt safe and empowered, not trapped.
