Chapter 39

1410 Words

“You’re pregnant…” I sat in the garden’s shadows, savoring a glass of wine, while Erika sipped her tea. She set the cup down slowly, turned toward me, and smiled. I caught her reflection in my peripheral vision but kept my eyes on the expansive garden. It was beautiful, though not quite the view from my castle balcony in the North. Still, its charm was undeniable. “Yes, I am,” she confirmed. “Blaze couldn’t stop talking about it,” I remarked, finally turning to face her. “Is it his?” I wasn’t blind or naïve. I had noticed Erika slipping away more often than I could count. It was surprising that Blaze had never noticed, but maybe he was just preoccupied with the crown and watching his younger brother, Ashes, suffer. I knew, though, there was only one person she could be seeing—my uncle.
