CHAPTER - 4

Selena lingered in the doorway of her new room, silver pendant warm against her chest. The gray dress from the ceremony had been replaced with something simple, but the weight of eyes on her made her feel small. Lucienne was already downstairs. His golden gaze had not left her since the mark appeared the night before. Even in the sunlight, he seemed carved from fire and steel, every movement precise, controlled, but undeniably alive. Darius followed behind him, lighter in step, but alert, always near Selena like a shadow she could cling to. The dining hall smelled of baked bread, roasted meats, and tension. Alara sat at the head of the table, Seraphine perched like a queen-in-waiting, her hands tight around a silver goblet. Selena swallowed and followed the boys to their seats, every footstep echoing like a drum of warning in the silent hall. Lucienne’s voice broke the quiet. “Sit.” Selena obeyed, hands folded in her lap. Darius slid in beside her, offering a reassuring glance. Alara’s eyes blazed. “This household is under my authority. That includes you, Selena. You will obey rules, manners, and your place.” Selena’s throat tightened, but she managed a quiet, “Yes, Mother.” Seraphine’s lips curled. “Place? This isn’t just rules, Mother. It’s an insult.” Lucienne’s gaze flicked between the twins. “Insult is irrelevant. The mark is truth. She is mine. Accept it, or accept consequences.” Alara slammed her hand on the table, making the silverware jump. “I will not have my chosen Luna treated as… as..” She stopped, realizing words failed her. Rage and fear twisted her face. Darius leaned slightly toward Selena, whispering, “Don’t let them crush you. You’re stronger than they think.” Selena’s lips twitched with a faint, grateful smile. “I’ll try.” Seraphine’s voice cut sharp. “Try? That’s not enough. You cannot take him from me!” Lucienne’s wolf growled low, and even in the sunlit hall, it vibrated against Selena’s bones. “I'm not yours to take, Seraphine. You will learn respect.” Alara shot Lucienne a glare. “You may be Alpha, but you will not undermine my authority in my own home. Both of my daughters live under this roof until I say otherwise. Do you understand?” Lucienne’s jaw tightened. “I understand. But the girl marked by the Moon stays close. That is not negotiable.” Seraphine’s fists clenched beneath the table. “This is tyranny!” Selena’s fingers brushed the silver pendant. I’m here. I’m marked. I’m alive. Breakfast passed in strained silence. Each bite tasted of ash and fire. Darius chatted quietly with her, sharing small observations, keeping her tethered to some semblance of calm. Lucienne occasionally addressed her with clipped commands, ensuring she understood her place, but every glance lingered too long. Every movement of his wolf seemed to reach for her, testing boundaries that should not exist. Seraphine sat stiff as stone, every now and then glancing at Lucienne with thinly veiled anger. “You….” she started, then swallowed, her voice breaking. Rage and heartbreak tangled on her tongue. Alara’s eyes softened slightly toward Seraphine. “Control yourself. The packs are watching. Your failure is public.” Seraphine’s hands curled into fists. “Public humiliation is nothing compared to this. He… he touched her! He looked at her! And you..” She jabbed a finger at Alara. “You allow this?” Alara’s face darkened. “I allow what is necessary. You will obey, Seraphine. That is all.” Darius placed a hand over Selena’s, steadying her as her breath hitched. “Ignore them. Focus on today. Focus on surviving this.” Selena nodded, but her pulse thundered. I’m supposed to stand beside him, under the same roof. I’m supposed to live here, with my curse, with my sister, with all their eyes on me. Lucienne finally spoke, voice low, magnetic. “Selena, you will train with me. You will learn to control what the Moon marked. Do you understand?” Selena’s throat tightened, but she nodded. “Yes, Alpha.” Darius gave a small, encouraging smile. “Good. That’s the first step.” Seraphine’s hands trembled as she set down her cup. “I will not let this… this blasphemy continue,” she whispered. The room settled into tense silence again. Every breath seemed amplified, every movement a potential spark for chaos. Lucienne leaned back slightly, observing. “Darius, stay close to her. Ensure she is safe. She is new to this world, but she will learn quickly.” Darius inclined his head. “Always.” Selena’s heart raced. For the first time, she realized this was no longer about whispers or shadows. This was survival, strategy, and desire, entwined in the same space with two brothers, her rival sister, and a mother who would see her fail. The pendant against her chest pulsed as if alive. Tonight, everything begins. Nothing will ever be the same. And in that moment, as golden eyes met hers across the table, Selena knew the Blood Moon had chosen, and nothing… not her mother, not her sister, not the pack, would undo what had begun. The first day under the same roof had already changed everything.
