EMMA
I smile once more before getting into the luxurious car. As he walks the other way to get into the vehicle, I look at the small and simple house through the window, thinking of my son.
The drive is shorter than taking a subway and walking to where the family mansion is located, and my legs thank me when we arrive early on my first day.
I thank the driver for the ride and walk quickly, sighing, to the mansion road. And you don't need to do anything, as the big door is opened by Bethany as if she already knows I am here.
“Miss Cooper!”, She says my name, and I feel ashamed for having fainted before her.
“Good morning, Bethany! I hope I'm not too early or in the way...”, I murmur hesitantly, but she nods.
“You're right on time; Mr. Laurent had to leave very early for work, and Mrs. Laurent is having breakfast, Enzo is already awake, and Liza is still sleeping. Come in!”
I nod and enter the house, feeling relieved that I don't have to meet Alex right now. As we walk into the living room, I hear Bethany say that I need to get Enzo ready for school and stay with the baby all day.
“Did you understand everything?”
“Yes, perfectly.”
I smile at the housekeeper, and we hear the sound of heels approaching the living room. Seconds later, I see a stunning woman in front of us; it is impossible not to look at her and notice that the woman is very beautiful.
The same woman I saw in those pictures when I researched Alex Laurent's wife on the internet.
“Bethany, I'll be right there.”, the woman stops saying when she notices my presence and looks at me from head to toe, making me completely uncomfortable with her gaze.
“You must be the new nanny...”, she murmurs, staring at me, and I nod quickly.
The woman is very beautiful; she has beautiful short shoulder-length hair, dark eyes, and a slim, tall body that would make any woman envious. She exudes luxury just by looking at her; surely the pair of heels she is wearing would pay several months' rent for the house I share with Coral.
“Mrs. Laurent, this is the children's new nanny, Emma!”, Bethany introduces us, and I speak:
“It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Laurent...”
“You are much younger than I imagined, but okay, I'm late, and I have to go, Bethany.”
Bethany nods her head, asking me to come up and see the children while she continues talking to Alex's wife.
I climb the steps of the long staircase quickly and look back, seeing that the woman is still looking at me as she says something to the housekeeper.
I am sure she imagined me much older, and maybe she thinks I am too young and irresponsible to take care of her children, but I can do this very well, and I love children.
Furthermore, I try not to let this affect me as I walk down the long hallway and knock twice on the door to Enzo's room before I enter and see the boy sitting on the rug with several strollers around him.
“Good morning, Enzo!”, I smile as I approach him, and he gives me a shy smile.
“Good morning, are you going to stay and look after us today?”, Enzo asks in his cute voice, and I nod and kneel beside him.
“We can play when you get home, but right now you need to take a shower and get organized for school, okay?”, I say and expect him to deny it like any other kid, but he just nods and stands up like a good boy.
I thought that every child hated going to school; I was like that and always hated to stop playing to go to that boring place and spend hours there, but I see that Enzo is a different child, a polite and very kind boy, and this encourages me to continue in this work.
I help the little boy take a shower and get dressed in his school uniform, and I am surprised with the final result when I look at Enzo; he is very cute wearing the suit and pants of the private school he attends.
It is different from the public schools in this country; he is only four years old and has all this at his disposal because he was born into a very rich family with rich people.
I hear Liza crying through the baby monitor, and I leave Enzo's room to take the baby on my lap. I see the time and quickly change her diaper, and we go down together with the little boy to have breakfast.
There are several employees in the kitchen, and I help Enzo with his breakfast while I start nursing the little girl with the bottle of hot milk. Being with her in my arm reminds me of Benjamin, but I need to focus on my work.
Bethany tells me that Xavier is also the driver responsible for bringing Enzo home, and I see this as the little boy gets in and sits in the car seat.
I walk back into the house, holding Liza in my arms, and walk back up to her beautiful room. I will never get tired of looking at all the decorations in this place, made just for this baby.
She didn't cry with me today, and I am thankful that she is still a good girl when I start bathing her.
“Hey.”, I say, laughing as she slams her legs and hands into the water and gets me completely wet.
She looks at me, laughing at what she is doing, and I keep smiling while watching her. I see that the little girl loves to take a bath, and she starts crying when I take her out of her little tub.
“You love water, don't you?”, I say, tickling her tummy as she lies on her changing table.
“Come on, it's cold outside, so let's pick out some warm clothes for you, little angel...” I say this after opening the dresser and seeing that there are lots and lots of clothes.
I widen my eyes and open the girl's closet, seeing more clothes and dresses that surely cost more than my old clothes.
Furthermore, I pick out a sweatshirt set and put on the diaper before I start dressing her. Besides, I have the little girl on my lap, and my eyes are fixed on the window in her room.
I pull aside the curtains and smile when I see a beautiful, huge garden with lots of flowers and plants. I take a blanket and cover the little girl in my arms before going down to the first floor and leaving the house.
Likewise, I walk down to the garden and sit in one of the chairs, watching the sun hit our faces. Liza moves in my arms, making baby sounds as we enjoy the morning sun's rays on us.
I thought that my first day at work would be very difficult since the two children were not used to me yet, but I was wrong; the time passed quickly, and luckily Liza adored me.
Enzo arrived in the afternoon, and together we started to play while the baby slept in her crib. I thought I would feel terrible to be in this house, to be in my son's father's house, but I tried not to think about it most of the time, and I managed to do that.
I kept my mind busy with the children, but I was always looking at my cell phone to see if there was any message or call from Coral about Benjamin, but there was nothing, and that made me more relieved to continue with my work.
This mansion in this condominium is a dream. I played with the children in the garden, and I thanked God that I had reached the end of my workday and that I had not found Alex in front of me again.
But his wife arrived in the afternoon and stayed all the time in the heated pool, while I stayed all the time with her children.
I can't judge people by knowing them, but I realized that Sofia Laurent is a very absent mother in her children's lives. I don't know her, but I could see it in her attitude today.
After feeding the two children, I put them to sleep and went downstairs. Seeing that I am at the end of my workday, I walk to the living room, finding Bethany walking towards me holding an envelope in her hands.
“You were great, and the kids loved you; Xavier will pick you up again tomorrow, and Mr. Laurent asked me to give this to you since it's the end of the month.”, she says, handing me the heavy envelope.
“But I...”, I try to say that I am completely confused, but she quickly interrupts me.
“In time, you will realize that Mr. Laurent is a very generous man with his employees. Have a nice evening, Miss Cooper.”, the woman says, smiling and touching my shoulder before walking away towards the kitchen of the house.
I force my feet to walk to the exit of the mansion as I crack a smile. I was about to ask for an advance on my paycheck, but I don't need it because it happened.
Furthermore, I walk to the outside of the house and find Xavier standing outside his car.
“Are you ready to go, miss?”, He asks, and I nod, getting into the car quickly.
I open the envelope, noticing that there is a large and good amount of money inside. I smile, putting the money notes inside my wallet because now I can finally buy the medicines my son needs.
Furthermore, I ask the driver to drop me off at a pharmacy closer to home, but I am surprised when he says he can wait for me to take me home again.
This time I manage to buy all the medicine the doctor wrote on the prescription, and I arrive home smiling, tell my best friend everything that happened and head straight to the bedroom to see my little one asleep in his crib.
Coral tells me he didn't have a fever today. I wake him up to take the medicine I bought. Benjamin starts crying, and I quickly take him on my lap and start to sing a children's song. At that moment, I realized I was smiling.
“Mommy did it, my love...”, I whisper, looking at my son, who sucks the milk from my breast in a quick way while looking at me.
“Now Mommy can give you more good things, everything will be better now...”, I whisper again, touching his little face.
I close my eyes, leaning my head against the chair still holding Benjamin, and soon Alex's name pops into my mind, I open my eyes quickly, remembering the perfect family he has without us.
He has adorable children, a very beautiful model wife, a beautiful house, and lots of money.
“No doubt your father has a perfect life, son...”, I whisper, holding Benjamin's small hand.
“But don't worry, we don't need him; we'll make it together, okay?”, I say, smiling, kissing his cheek, before lifting my head and closing my eyes again, starting to pray silently, thanking God for doing this for me.
I did well on my first day at work, and I hope I will continue to do so in the coming days, weeks, and months.
I put on comfortable clothes, and with the money I earned today, I paid back the amount of money Coral lent me yesterday to take Benjamin to the hospital.
There is still a lot of money left over, and I decide to save an amount to buy diapers and other things for Benjamin, and for the first time in a long time, I order pizza to eat at home.
My best friend and I sit in front of the television at night with Benjamin in my arms and watch a good romance movie while eating pizza.
My eyes fixate on the wedding scene in the movie, and I look over to see Coral quietly crying as my mind begins to project images that will never happen in my lifetime.
I quickly picture myself in that movie scene, and I shake my head, feeling a few tears in my eyes, because I know full well that all of that will never be possible for a person like me.
I feel a lone tear coming down my face, and I dry my face quickly, looking at my son on my lap, who is almost asleep again.
At that moment, I feel very sensitive for some unknown reason, and I quickly think back to when I kissed Alex at that party for the first time. He was a stranger to me, but I felt something for him like I had never felt for anyone before in my whole life.
And that strange feeling brought me to the person I love most in this world.
Benjamin.
