The first rays of dawn filtered through the curtains of the guesthouse, but Zara Sinclair had no intention of greeting them. She lay sprawled across the bed in nothing but a tiny black camisole and lace panties, her long wavy hair fanned across the pillow. The mandatory 6 a.m. prayer? Ignored. Let the Reverend come looking for her.
At 5:25 a.m., sharp knocks echoed through the quiet house.
“Miss Sinclair,” Caleb’s deep voice rang out, firm and commanding. “Morning prayer starts at six. The others are already gathered.”
Zara smirked, staying silent.
More knocks. Harder this time.
“Zara. Open the door.”
She stretched lazily, enjoying the power. “It’s locked, Reverend. I’m not feeling very… spiritual this morning.”
A heavy pause followed.
“I will not tolerate defiance on day one,” Caleb said, his tone low and unyielding. “This program has rules for a reason. Your soul is at stake here.”
Zara rolled her eyes and raised her voice just enough. “My soul is exhausted from all the saving you people want to do. Tell God I’ll pray later. Or better yet, you pray for both of us. I’m sure He listens extra hard to you.”
Caleb’s voice sharpened. “Counseling is still at 4 p.m. sharp. Do not test me further, Zara. I expect you there, dressed appropriately. Skipping prayer is already a mark against you. Keep pushing, and I’ll call your parents by evening.”
Zara bit her lip, a thrill running through her at his authoritative tone. “Yes, sir,” she drawled mockingly. “Whatever you say, Reverend Cross.”
She heard his footsteps retreat...Strong. Controlled. Exactly the kind of man she loved breaking.
****
By 3:55 p.m., Zara was ready.
She had chosen her outfit with surgical precision, a fitted white blouse unbuttoned just enough to reveal the lace edge of her bra, paired with a short navy skirt that hugged her hips and thighs. Her hair fell in loose waves, lips painted a bold red.
When she entered Caleb’s office at exactly 4 p.m., he was already seated behind a wooden desk, Bible open in front of him. He looked every inch the powerful man of God... crisp shirt, strong jaw clenched, dark eyes lifting to meet hers with cool authority.
“You’re on time,” he noted. “Surprising.”
“I like keeping you on your toes.” Zara closed the door behind her and sauntered over, deliberately choosing the chair closest to his side of the desk instead of the one opposite. She crossed her legs slowly, letting the skirt ride up. “So… how does this saving business work? Do you wave your hands and poof! I become like Daphne?”
Caleb leaned back, studying her with unwavering intensity. “No theatrics. Just truth. Let’s start with scripture.” He slid the Bible toward her. “Read Galatians 5:19-21. Out loud.”
Zara picked it up, skimming the page before reading in a slow, sultry voice:
“‘The acts of the flesh are obvious: s****l immorality, impurity, debauchery…’” She looked up at him through her lashes. “Sounds like my Friday nights.”
Caleb’s expression remained steady, but she noticed the slight flex of his fingers on the desk.
“Continue,” he ordered.
“‘…idolatry, hatred, discord…’” Zara leaned forward, giving him a generous view of her cleavage. “You know, Reverend, this list is missing something important. What about repressed desire? Doesn’t the Bible talk about how dangerous it is to deny what your body clearly wants?”
Caleb met her gaze head-on, unfazed. “It talks about self-control. Discipline. The spirit ruling over the flesh. Something you clearly lack.”
Zara smiled wickedly. She reached across the desk and traced a light finger along the back of his hand as he held the Bible. His skin was warm.
“And what about you?” she whispered huskily. “Thirty years old. Handsome, strong, devoted. Don’t you ever get lonely at night in that big house of yours? Don’t you ever ache for a woman’s touch? Or do you just pray the hunger away?”
Caleb didn’t pull his hand back immediately. Instead, he turned his palm and caught her wrist in a firm grip..not rough, but dominant.
“Careful,” he warned, voice low and dangerously calm. “You’re playing with fire you don’t understand. I’ve counseled many lost souls, Zara. Seduction is your weapon, but it won’t work on me.”
“Won’t it?” She didn’t try to free her wrist. Instead, she leaned even closer, her breath brushing his knuckles. “Your pulse is racing right now, Reverend. I can feel it. Tell me honestly...when was the last time a woman made you hard just by looking at you?”
Caleb’s eyes darkened, a storm brewing behind them. He released her wrist but held her stare.
“I am a man, Zara. Not a saint without feelings. But unlike the boys you’re used to, I don’t let my desires control me. I answer to God first.” His voice dropped, deep and commanding. “You want to challenge me? Fine. But know this... every time you try to tempt me, I will push you closer to the truth you’re running from.”
Zara felt heat pool in her belly. His resistance was making her want him more.
She stood up slowly and moved around the desk, perching on the edge right beside him. Her thigh brushed against his arm.
“What truth am I running from?” she asked, voice soft but challenging. “That my parents never loved me? That they only care about their perfect Daphne?” She reached out and ran a single finger slowly down the center of his chest, tracing the line of his shirt buttons. “Or that deep down, you want me just as badly as I want to ruin you?”
Caleb caught her hand again, this time pressing it flat against his chest. She could feel his heart pounding powerfully beneath her palm.
“You assume desire equals defeat,” he said, voice rough around the edges but still controlled. “I desire many things in this life. Beauty. Passion. Connection. But I will not sacrifice my calling for temporary pleasure. Not even for a woman as dangerous as you.”
Zara’s breath hitched. She shifted closer, her knee sliding between his thighs as she sat on the desk.
“Dangerous?” she purred. “I like that. Tell me more, Reverend. What else do you want to do to this dangerous woman? Because your body is screaming for me right now.”
Caleb stood up abruptly, towering over her. For a second, she thought he might kiss her. Instead, he gripped the edge of the desk on either side of her hips, caging her without touching.
His face was inches from hers. “You want honesty? Fine. You’re beautiful. Seductive. The kind of temptation that could make any man question everything.” His voice was like velvet over steel. “But I am not any man. I will save you, Zara Sinclair. Even if saving you means fighting this fire between us every single day. Even if it costs me sleep. Even if I have to pray through every sinful thought you plant in my head.”
Zara’s heart hammered wildly. She tilted her face up, lips parted invitingly.
“Then pray now,” she whispered. “Or better yet… let me fix that ache you’re pretending doesn’t exist.”
She trailed her finger lower, stopping just above his belt.
Caleb grabbed her hand firmly, stopping its descent. His breathing was heavier now, but his eyes still burned with resolve.
“Session over,” he said hoarsely. “Tomorrow, 4 p.m. again. And Zara?”
“Yes, Reverend?”
He leaned in until his lips brushed her ear, sending shivers down her spine.
“Next time you skip morning prayer, I’ll come in and drag you to the altar myself. Dress or no dress. Do not test my limits again.”
He stepped back, adjusting his shirt with controlled movements, then walked to the door and held it open for her.
Zara slid off the desk, legs slightly unsteady. As she passed him, she paused, letting her body brush against his one last time.
“Sweet dreams tonight, Caleb,” she whispered. “I’ll be thinking about how good your hands would feel pinning me down.”
She walked out without looking back, a satisfied smile on her lips.
Behind her, Caleb closed the door hard. Alone in his office, he gripped the back of his chair, knuckles white, breathing ragged.
“Lord, give me strength,” he muttered.
But the fire Zara had lit was already burning hotter than any prayer could easily extinguish.
