The clock on the nightstand glowed 1:47 a.m., but sleep refused to come. Zara tossed and turned in the simple bed, her body still buzzing from the day’s events... Daphne’s venom, her parents’ cold expectations, and most of all, Reverend Caleb Cross pinning her with that dominant stare while declaring he would only fall on his own terms.
“Arrogant, sexy bastard,” she muttered, throwing off the covers.
She slipped into a short, sheer black robe that barely covered her lace panties and thin camisole. No bra. Barefoot, she crept out of the guesthouse into the cool night air. The church compound was silent under a sky full of stars. The garden path led to a small fountain area with stone benches... quiet, private, and far from prying eyes.
She wasn’t expecting to find him there.
Reverend Caleb Cross knelt on the grass a few meters away, head bowed in fervent prayer. His broad shoulders were tense beneath a simple dark t-shirt, muscular arms flexed as his hands clasped tightly together. Even in the dim moonlight, he looked powerful. Tormented.
Zara leaned against a tree, watching him silently for a long moment. The sight stirred something dangerous in her chest.
“Praying for strength against me, Reverend?” she called softly.
Caleb’s head snapped up. He rose to his full height in one fluid motion, eyes locking onto her like a predator sensing danger. His gaze traveled down her barely-covered body before he forced it back to her face.
“Zara,” he said, voice rough with exhaustion and warning. “You shouldn’t be out here. Especially not dressed like that.”
She stepped closer, the night breeze pressing the thin robe against her curves. “I couldn’t sleep. Too many thoughts about a certain stubborn preacher who keeps rejecting what we both know he wants.”
Caleb ran a hand through his hair, looking utterly done with the battle raging inside him. “This has to stop. I’ve prayed for hours tonight. Begged God to remove this… temptation. And here you are, walking straight into my weakness.”
Zara stopped just an arm’s length away. “Weakness? Or truth?” She tilted her head, studying the exhaustion and fire in his dark eyes. “Tell me something real, Caleb. Not the polished preacher answer. Why did a man like you..handsome, strong, could have any woman he wanted, choose this life of rules and restraint?”
Caleb exhaled sharply and sat on the stone bench, gesturing for her to sit beside him. She did, close enough that her bare thigh brushed his.
“I had everything the world offers,” he said quietly, staring at the fountain. “Corporate success, money, women throwing themselves at me. But it felt empty. One night I had a genuine encounter with God that changed me. I gave it all up to serve something bigger than myself. Until you arrived… I thought I was winning that battle.”
Zara’s usual sarcasm softened for a moment. “And now?”
He turned to look at her, eyes intense. “Now I’m fighting every second not to drag you into my arms and show you exactly how much I want you. But I won’t. Not like this. Not while I’m supposed to be saving you.”
The vulnerability in his voice hit her harder than expected. Zara reached out and placed her hand on his thigh, squeezing gently.
“Maybe I don’t need saving,” she whispered. “Maybe you need liberating.”
She leaned in slowly, lips aiming for his. Caleb didn’t pull away immediately. Their breaths mingled. Just as their lips were about to touch, he moved with lightning speed.
His large, powerful hands caught both her wrists in an iron grip. He pinned them firmly above her head with one hand while his other gripped her shoulder, holding her in place against the back of the bench. The restraint was dominant, unyielding, and undeniably strong.
Zara’s eyes widened, then darkened with raw desire. A soft, involuntary moan escaped her lips.. low and breathy. She bit down on her lower lip seductively, gazing up at him through heavy lashes.
“f**k…” she breathed, voice husky. “That’s so hot. Do you have any idea how sexy you look right now, restraining me like this?”
Caleb’s face was inches from hers. His breathing was ragged, jaw clenched so tight it looked painful. The torment in his eyes was clear..he was so done, hanging on by a thread. Sweat beaded on his forehead. Every muscle in his body was rigid with the effort of holding back.
“Zara…” he growled, voice deep and strained. “You’re going to be the death of me. Do you know how badly I want to rip this robe off and take you right here on this bench? How many nights I’ve already imagined burying myself inside you while you moan my name?”
Another soft moan slipped from Zara as she arched slightly toward him, testing his grip. His hold on her wrists tightened..not painfully, but possessively enough to make heat flood between her thighs.
“Then do it,” she challenged breathlessly, biting her lip again. “Stop praying your feelings away and f**k me like the man you really are, Caleb. I can feel how hard you are right now. Stop fighting it.”
Caleb’s eyes squeezed shut for a second, his entire body trembling with the internal war. When he opened them again, they were blazing with conflicted lust.
“You have no idea what you’re asking,” he rasped, leaning closer until his forehead nearly touched hers. “If I fall, Zara, I fall completely. My career...my reputation..my calling. Everything. And right now… God help me… I’m closer than I’ve ever been.”
He lowered his head, lips hovering just above the sensitive skin of her neck. Zara shivered violently, another needy sound escaping her.
Just as Caleb’s control looked ready to snap
“Reverend Cross? Is everything alright out here?”
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness. Church security guard, an older man named Mr. Jacob approached from the path, looking concerned.
Caleb released Zara instantly and shot to his feet, stepping away from her as if burned. He ran both hands over his face, trying to compose himself.
“Yes, Mr. Jacob,” he answered, voice slightly hoarse but regaining its authority. “Just… counseling a late-night spiritual matter. Miss Sinclair couldn’t sleep. We’re done now.”
The guard’s eyes flicked suspiciously between them.. Zara flushed and disheveled in her tiny robe, Caleb breathing hard. He nodded slowly. “Very well, sir. Goodnight.”
As the guard walked away, Caleb turned back to Zara. His expression was stormy, filled with frustration, desire, and deep conflict.
“Go back to the guesthouse,” he ordered, voice rough. “Now.”
Zara stood slowly, robe slightly open, lips still swollen from biting them. She gave him one last seductive smile.
“Sweet dreams, Reverend,” she whispered. “I’ll be dreaming about your hands pinning me down… and what comes next.”
She walked away slowly, hips swaying, knowing his eyes were burning into her back.
Caleb dropped back onto the bench, elbows on his knees, head in his hands.
“God… what have You sent me?” he whispered brokenly into the night.
The battle was no longer just beginning.
It was consuming him alive.
