Chapter 16

Alessandra’s Political Moves. The wavering light of a single chandelier created long shadows on the stone walls, enveloping the council room in a solemn atmosphere. With the grace of a predator, Alessandra walked through the room with poise and purpose. Her silver hair, secured in a tight knot, shone in the dim light, and her keen eyes looked over the faces of the elderly people gathered around the round table. With a smooth and authoritative voice, Alessandra said, "Thank you for coming." "I'll save your time. We must make an informed decision about our pack's course of action as we stand at a crossroads. Every day, the possibility of instability gets closer. With their age-lined faces displaying anxiety, the elders exchanged cautious looks. Elder Vincenzo, one of them, leaned forward. "Alessandra, you talk of instability, yet the pack has survived a lot of hardships. Why is this moment so vulnerable? A calculating smirk curved Alessandra's lips. Strong leadership is essential to our future, but Lorenzo's unresolved relationship with a renegade poses a threat to everything we've worked so hard to achieve. Unpredictable and perilous are fated partners. We cannot stake the stability of the pack on a relationship that can only end in disaster. Her remarks lingered in the atmosphere, ingraining themselves into her audience's thoughts. Her speech carefully heightened the elders' anxieties, and one by one they nodded in accord. Elder Silvia then spoke, her tone firm but tentative. "Alessandra, there are rumors. hints that Isabella's reappearance is not coincidental. rumors regarding her family's historical involvement and potential future implications. Alessandra's hand twitched just enough to show how uneasy she was. Her eyes sharpened as she hastily covered it with a measured breath. With a contemptuous tone, she declared, "Rumors are the weapons of the weak." "But don't worry, we'll take every safety measure." Silvia's gaze, however, remained fixed on her as though she could see through Alessandra's calm veneer. When Marco Cacciatore reached Alessandra's quarters, the moon was high. A massive man with a never-ending sneer, he walked into the room with a menacing aura. With her back to him and her eyes focused on the far horizon, Alessandra stood at the window. Marco's gravelly voice broke the stillness as he stated, "You called me." Alessandra said, without turning around. "Marco, I have an assignment for you. One that calls for your specific set of abilities. Marco's sneer got bigger. "I'm paying attention." At last, Alessandra turned, the moonlight highlighting her angular features. "You must look into Isabella for me. Discover everything she does, every connection she makes. Don't overlook anything. Marco's eyes shone with curiosity. "And what can I gain from it?" Alessandra took a step forward, her voice fading to a whisper of conspiracy. "There are benefits to loyalty. Keeping her secrets will make you a better member of the pack. A place of authority—second only to me. The bargain was sealed with the promise of power. Marco grinned broadly as he nodded. "Think of it as finished." He was about to walk away when Alessandra's voice interrupted him. "Marco, one more thing. Be discrete. If she detects anything, the whole scheme may fall apart. "Don't worry," Marco added, laughing dangerously. "She won't anticipate me." Alessandra came into Antonio's study, where he was sitting with a glass of dark wine. Her charismatic personality effortlessly demanded attention. Antonio motioned her to take a seat, but his face was still reserved. With a caustic tone, Antonio remarked, "I assume this isn't a social visit." Alessandra's head c****d. "No, it's not. I am here in order to talk about Lorenzo—and his engagement. Antonio's forehead wrinkled. "How about it?" With a tone of urgency, Alessandra stated, "He's hesitating." "Dissent will get more confident if he doesn't complete the union quickly. Antonio, this marriage will guarantee the pack's cohesiveness. With a sigh, Antonio twirled his glass of wine. "You don't believe I've tried? Lorenzo thinks for himself. Like his mother, he is obstinate. "Then exert more effort," Alessandra insisted. "Remind him of his responsibility. And we'll use Isabella to bolster our argument if he doesn't comply. Antonio's eyes became piercing. "What do you mean?" A mischievous smile curved Alessandra's lips. She can serve as our scapegoat if needed. If something goes wrong, she will be held directly responsible. The weight of her words hung between them, and the room fell silent. Antonio's face hardened as he nodded slowly. Excellent. I'll take care of Lorenzo. Alessandra was by herself in the study, and her eyes became calculating. "Isabella will fulfill her purpose, no matter what," she whispered to herself. Low murmurs filled the council chamber as Lorenzo stood in the shadows of the hallway, his keen ear picking up tidbits of a contentious debate. Standing in the middle of the room, Alessandra's powerful presence dominated the area. She addressed the assembled elders with purposeful ease and a steady, convincing voice. With an authoritative tone, Alessandra stated, "We cannot let chaos seep into the cracks of our foundation." "Stability is essential for the pack's future, and unity is the first step toward that stability. Emotional leaders jeopardize everything we have worked so hard to achieve. When Lorenzo saw the veiled punch, his jaw tensed. Alessandra never specifically mentioned him in her remarks, but it was obvious what she meant. By gradually establishing herself as the voice of reason, she was casting doubt on his capacity for leadership. He could see the elders, their features etched with concern, nodding in accord through the gap in the door. He was irritated by Alessandra's increasing power over them. How had she been able to gain their trust so thoroughly? "She's engaging in a risky game," he said to himself. Lorenzo retreated into the shadows as the door creaked open and Alessandra appeared, her face calm and collected. She hesitated, her keen eyes darting around the corridor as if she could feel him. Lorenzo's pulse accelerated as he held his breath. She turned and left after a time, her footsteps making a slight reverberation on the stone floor. Lorenzo let out a breath, his thoughts whirling. He had to find out what Alessandra was up to, and quickly. Although there was minimal fuss to mark Alessandra's father's arrival, his presence was nonetheless formidable. Niccolo was a tall man with piercing blue eyes and salt-and-pepper hair who radiated a sense of controlled menace. His comments were short, his grip was forceful, and every gesture he made exuded confidence. Although the encounter in Antonio's private study was short, it had significant ramifications. Niccolo and Alessandra sat next to one other, their resemblance remarkable in the acuity of their eyes and the clarity of their features. Alessandra said in a quiet, confident voice, "The elders are almost swayed." "But we have to get rid of one variable." Niccolo's eyes darkened as he leaned forward. Isabella. Alessandra gave a nod. Everything is disturbed by her presence. We might lose control of the pack if she comes back. To make sure that doesn't occur, I have a strategy. Antonio scowled from his seat across from them. "To what extent are you prepared to go?" "To the extent required," Alessandra said icily. "Marco is already compiling data. We'll openly disparage her once we get what we require. Make her appear dangerous to the pack. A sneer curved Niccolo's lips. "All right. Alessandra, a display of strength will guarantee your position. Additionally, Lorenzo will be forced to cooperate. Alessandra's eyes glistened with joy as she gave herself a rare smile. "Everything will come together soon." Alessandra got up and took a sealed envelope with her father's crest on it from her cloak. She grinned as she gave it to Antonio. Bring this over to Lorenzo. He needs to realize the seriousness of the situation. With her eyes reflecting the dim glimmer of the study's firelight, her words lingered in the air like a menacing vow.
