Chapter 13

Resistance from Within. Long shadows were thrown against the stone walls by the candles' wavering glow in the dimly illuminated huge meeting hall. As the voices of the pack elders swelled around him, Lorenzo sat at the head of the table with a neutral expression. Elder Moretti remarked sharply, "This union with Alessandra may seem advantageous, but the bond with Isabella cannot be ignored." You can't ignore a fated partner without repercussions. Lorenzo's mouth clenched. Beneath the table, he balled his fists, his fingers pushing into the hard wood. The elder's remarks were far too accurate. His tone was measured but stern as he stated, "The engagement is necessary for the survival of our pack." "The Lunetti's needs cannot be subordinated to personal feelings." Leaning forward was another senior, a wiry man with a constant frown on his face. What about the legends, though? Rejecting a fated mate might be disastrous for both wolves. We cannot afford the risk if the bond is real. Throughout the room, there were murmurs of agreement. The seniors, all seasoned wolves whose devotion to the pack had never faltered, caught Lorenzo's attention. But they hesitated because they were worried about the old prophecies. After a long pause, Lorenzo replied, "I understand your apprehension," with a trace of fatigue in his voice. However, Alessandra's partnership ensures our future. Isabella is unable to. His remarks weighed heavy, and the room became silent. But doubt stirred in the pit of his stomach. He ignored the curious looks and concentrated on the empty chalice in front of him. Elder Moretti continued. And what about the potential for unrest? The wolves talk about her and the link between mates. Lorenzo, instincts cannot be suppressed. With his chair scuffing the stone floor, Lorenzo stood up. "This meeting has come to an end," he said icily. He left without waiting for an answer, the words of the elders resonating behind him. Antonio occupied a dominant and uncompromising seat at the head of the table. He dared no one to dispute him as his keen eyes swept over the faces of the assembled elders. With a deep voice that broke through the whispers, he declared, "This conversation is a waste of time." "There is no question about Lorenzo and Alessandra's engagement." However, despite Antonio's scowl, Elder Moretti started, "But, Alpha, the unity of the pack is fragile." Speculation on the relationship with Isabella— "Don't matter!" The thud echoed down the hall as Antonio slammed his fist against the table. "The Lunetti's best interests are unaffected by the bond, if it exists." Lorenzo squirmed uneasily in his chair, staring at the table. The elders were looking at each other warily, and the mood in the room was oppressive. He could feel their implicit charges bearing down on him, their conviction that he was jeopardizing everything by going against the fundamental laws of nature. Antonio looked at Lorenzo abruptly. "You know your responsibility, don't you, son?" After a moment of hesitation, Lorenzo nodded. Although the words felt like ash in his mouth, he answered, "Yes, Father." Antonio faced the elders once more. Then there isn't a problem. Our position is strengthened by Alessandra's family. This has to do with strategy, not emotion. The elders looked at each other, but none of them ventured to say anything more. Antonio had absolute power, thus it was risky to challenge him. Elder Moretti, however, ventured to apply light pressure. "Alpha, although hearts cannot be ordered, the pack will follow your example. If discontent simmers. Antonio cut in with a last tone, "It won't." "This engagement will go according to schedule. Instead of spreading unfounded rumors, concentrate your efforts on maintaining stability. With the decision weighing heavily on him, Lorenzo said nothing. He met Elder Moretti's sharp eyes as the conference came to an end. Doubt, worry, and the tacit admission that this choice would bring them to disaster were all very evident. Over the packhouse courtyard, the moon hung low, illuminating the cobblestones with a gleaming gleam. With his arms folded, Lorenzo gazed off into the distance while leaning on a stone pillar. Matteo came stealthily, his footsteps hushed by the darkness. Matteo broke the pause by remarking, "You seem to be carrying the weight of the world." Lorenzo laughed bitterly. "Has that feeling." His countenance was troubled as he turned to meet his pal. "I'm caught in the middle of a tangled web that includes the elders, my father, and Alessandra." Matteo's eyebrow went up. "Captured, or intentionally trapped?" With a groan, Lorenzo combed through his hair. "I'm not sure anymore. On paper, the engagement makes sense, yet it feels a little off. Every time Isabella comes to mind. His voice was heavy with unsaid emotion as he faded off. Matteo took a time to examine him. "You know, you don't have to wed Alessandra. Even while your father's goals may be in line with the pack's survival, that doesn't mean you should follow them. "You believe it would help to defy him?" With a note of contempt in his voice, Lorenzo inquired. Matteo, Antonio Lunetti doesn't bend. You are aware of that. Lorenzo felt Matteo's hand on his shoulder. You're more than just his son, though. The Alpha of the future is you. Additionally, you must lead with your emotions as much as your intellect. Lorenzo's jaw tightened as he averted his gaze. "It is easier said than done." The sound of approaching footsteps interrupted Matteo before he could reply. Elder Moretti emerged, his face solemn. He said, "Lorenzo, a word," in a tone that made no space for debate. "What is it?" Lorenzo straightened and asked. "There are rumors," Moretti stated warily. There are rumors that Isabella has been spotted close to the rogue areas. You must take care of this—before it becomes an issue. After hearing the elder's remarks, Lorenzo felt his heart halt. The members of the pack had gathered beneath the light of lanterns hung between tall trees, and the celebration was in full flow. Voices rose in discussion and laughing, and the air was heavy with the aroma of sweet wine and grilled meat. Alessandra, a picture of calm and authority, stood at the center of the group, her golden gown glistening as she raised her glass. "To the unity and strength of the Lunetti Pack!" she exclaimed in a firm and authoritative voice. Glasses clinking in unison, the audience erupted in cheers. Lorenzo stood rigidly at her side, his jaw clenched, and she turned to face him. "And to the future of our alliance, one that will ensure prosperity for generations," she said, putting her arm around his. This time, the applause was not as unanimity. Alessandra's eyes were able to penetrate through the crowd. She noticed some elders' apprehensive looks, their doubts visible but unsaid. Unfazed, she grinned, her tone becoming more intimate. "I want to reassure everyone that Lorenzo and I are dedicated to the pack above all else, even though I know some people may have doubts about this union." Her tone was deliberate, a challenge barely disguised as assurance. As the whispers increased in volume, some people nodded in agreement while others looked at each other uneasily. Antonio smirked contentedly as he stood in the shadows, his son's silence indicating obedience. Alessandra's eyes went to Matteo, who hovered at the periphery of the group. She could not read his face, but she could see the faint tightening of his jaw. She enjoyed it since every sign of disapproval was a threat that needed to be controlled and served as a reminder of the fine line she had to walk. As the evening wore on, Alessandra's remarks continued to divide the group. Some supporters stepped out to offer words of support, while others withdrew into private discussions. Although her status as Lorenzo's fiancée was cemented, there was an unmistakable undercurrent of resistance, a tempest simmering beneath the surface. Lorenzo remained stiff with his hands clenched at his sides as the flickering firelight created ragged shadows in Antonio's study. Antonio dominated the room with his towering presence as he leaned on his desk. "What was it outside?" Antonio's voice was piercing, with each word piercing the dense atmosphere. "Everything we've built is being undermined by your silence." Lorenzo's ire simmered beneath the surface as his eyes narrowed. "I didn't make any mistakes. Everything seems to be under control between you and Alessandra. Antonio's features hardened into a mask of dominance as his face grew darker. “Lorenzo, this is serious. The pack is observing you. Your hesitancy makes us look weaker. Lorenzo yelled, "I'm not hesitating," as his voice rose. "However, you can't count on me to act like a puppet and act as though nothing is wrong." The sound of Antonio's palm slamming into the desk echoed throughout the room. "You are not the focus of this! The pack is the focus. The secret to keeping our alliances intact is Alessandra. In light of that, do you believe your sentiments are important? As his father's remarks struck a raw nerve, Lorenzo's jaw tensed. "What if the solution isn't this engagement? What if that is the cause of the pack's beginning to break apart? Antonio sneered, clearly disgusted. "Your lack of commitment is the only thing that will cause this pack to fall apart. The Alpha-to-be is you. Act as though you are. Between them, a thick, oppressive silence hovered. Lorenzo swiveled away, staring at the window through which the moon shone into the room. Alessandra's calculating comments from earlier were still fresh in his head as everything rushed. He was unable to overcome the draw of a link he had attempted to break or the weight of his doubts. Antonio's tone stayed hard yet his voice grew softer. "You must make a choice, Lorenzo. Do you support us or oppose us? Lorenzo remained silent. Rather, he walked out of the room, silently vowing to find out why Isabella had left, his father's expectations still ringing in his head. There was no other option.
