The Engagement Announcement.
The ceremonial grounds were streaked with gold when the rising sun peeked through the foliage. Isabella slipped through the crowd like a ghost, only her senses, sensitive to the growing tension, sensed her presence. Rumors were circulating through the throng, and the wolves of both packs were humming with excitement and speaking in quiet but frantic tones.
"Have you heard?" With a secretive tone, one wolf whispered. "Lorenzo will make a significant announcement."
Another said, his eyes sparkling with anticipation, "They say it's about the future of the packs." "Is the engagement the reason?"
The words struck Isabella like a punch, causing her stomach to turn. As she passed the groups that were muttering, she clinched her hands, making sure that her stride remained firm. With each wolf anxiously anticipating Lorenzo's next move, the gathering had taken on a heated atmosphere. Isabella, however, felt as though a rope was being tightened around her neck.
When she arrived at the edge of the grounds, she sought refuge in the shadows of the forest. "Tonight will change everything," the elder's cryptic warning replayed in her head. Even if it had happened, the imminence of what lay ahead weighed more heavily every second that went by.
She looked at Lorenzo from the other side of the clearing. His angular features were lighted by the sunlight as he stood close to the dais. His golden-brown eyes scanned the crowd with a controlled intensity, yet his expression was unreadable. Wolves gathered around him, showing their respect with each step. Their leader and their hope, he was at the heart of it all.
Isabella, however, could see the strain behind the surface. His jaw was set and his shoulders stiff. She could sense the turmoil he so skillfully concealed without having to be close to him. He didn't want to make whatever statement he was about to make.
Isabella's heart fell when she heard the noise of the crowd growing louder. It was the moment she feared.
Antonio towered over Lorenzo in the seclusion of a little antechamber close to the ceremonial hall, his powerful presence resonating across the room. His aged visage and graying hair further enhanced his image of power, and his keen eyes were relentlessly focused on his kid.
Antonio's voice was forceful yet low as he stated, "You've avoided this long enough." "You will tell Alessandra that you are engaged today."
Lorenzo's fists were clinched at his sides as he stood straight. "Daddy, I—"
Antonio cut in, his voice icy and decisive, "This isn't about you." "The pack is the focus. about surviving. Our future security depends on our cooperation with the Luporini family. You are aware of this.
Lorenzo's golden eyes flashed with frustration as his jaw tensed. "I am aware of the stakes. However, making this—
Antonio's voice rose as he yelled, "No one is forcing anything." "You've always known your responsibility. An excellent match is Alessandra. The pack respects her, and she will keep us in our place.
Trying to control his rage, Lorenzo looked aside, his chest heaving. He was silently reminded of what he was giving up by the connection he had with Isabella. However, his father's statement was accurate. He was essential to his pack. He was unable to avoid the burden of ensuring their survival; it was not only a choice.
With a tense tone, Lorenzo remarked softly, "Papa, this isn't just about politics." "It concerns my life."
Antonio took a step forward, his tone becoming softer without sacrificing its impact. "Lorenzo, your life is your pack. Remember that.
The room was silent for a long time. Lorenzo nodded at last, his shoulders hunched in surrender. "I'll carry it out."
Antonio put a firm hand on his son's shoulder while wearing a satisfied look. "All right. Let's not make them wait much longer.
The air was heavy with the unsaid weight of what was to happen, and the ceremonial hall was alive with expectancy. The chamber was crowded with wolves from both packs, looking expectantly at the dais and talking quietly. Lorenzo stood in the middle of it all, his towering body demanding attention in spite of the anxiety emanating from him.
With a triumphant and beautiful smile, Alessandra held onto his arm. Her elegant emerald gown glistened in the candlelight, and every gesture she made was designed to catch the eye. Lorenzo stiffened as she leaned closer and whispered something in his ear. She looked around the room before settling on Isabella.
Isabella stood close to the rear, her heart racing as she stared into Alessandra's arrogant face. She couldn't take her eyes off the humiliation of the day before, though. Rather, she maintained eye contact with Alessandra, her silent resistance unflinching.
Antonio and Pietro moved forward, their shouts demanding the attention of all the wolves in the room, and the hall fell silent. Isabella hardly heard Antonio as he started talking, his words full of intent. She kept her eyes on Lorenzo, who stood stiffly next to Alessandra, his face showing none of the anguish she knew he was experiencing.
Alessandra's smile grew as she tightened her hold on Lorenzo's arm as Antonio's speech reached its c****x. Lorenzo's golden eyes briefly met Isabella's as his gaze shifted to her. Even in its briefness, the connection was electric, and Isabella could feel the tie between them tugging.
However, the moment was over, and Lorenzo turned to face the audience with a composed expression on his face. Isabella was reminded of the reality she couldn't avoid by Alessandra's quiet giggle. Lorenzo was about to speak, and the room waitedon the precipice of revelation.
As Lorenzo moved closer, his massive bulk creating a lengthy shadow in the flickering torchlight, the hall fell silent. His demeanor was unreadable as his golden-brown eyes scanned the gathering. Alessandra stood next to him, smiling triumphantly, her green gown shining like a trophy, her hand resting possessively on his arm.
"Today is a crucial day for our packs," Lorenzo said in a firm and authoritative tone. "Our strength has always been unity, and this gathering strengthens that bond."
With their faces lit up with interest and expectation, the wolves of both groups muttered in unison. Every nerve in Isabella's body was tense as she stood in the rear. Hearing the words would be a whole new experience for her, even if she already knew what was coming.
Lorenzo hesitated, his eyes darting to Isabella and then back to his father. "I am happy to announce my engagement to Alessandra Luporini in order to secure the survival and strength of both the DeVargas and Lunetti Packs."
Cheers and applause broke out in the hall. With a smug look toward Isabella, Alessandra smiled and c****d her chin proudly. Isabella did not hear the thunderous sound. The weight of his words crushed her chest, shattering her heart into a thousand pieces.
Tears threatened to well up in her eyes, but she fought the urge. She made herself stay motionless and clinched her fists, her nails cutting into her palms. She refused to be weak even while everything around her fell apart. Not right now.
Lorenzo turned just enough to meet her eyes across the sea of gleeful wolves. Remorse flashed across his face as his golden eyes softened for a moment. Isabella maintained eye contact with him while the raging defiance inside her battled her anguish.
Then the crowd's thunderous shout engulfed the situation.
Isabella could take it no more, but the festivities went on in full force. The chilly night air hit her like a slap as she crept out of the corridor. As she made her way toward the edge of the woodland, the weight in her chest would not go away, making it difficult for her to breathe.
In the moonlight, the trees towered over the horizon, their shadows extending like silent guardians. Her mind racing, she strolled aimlessly, her feet crunching on the fallen leaves. Each word of Lorenzo's announcement pierced her mind more deeply than the one before it. She could still see the triumphant smile on Alessandra's face and sense the poisonous smugness radiating from her.
Isabella came to a clearing and fell to the ground, knees digging into the soft ground. As though that might keep the fragments of her broken heart together, she placed her palms to her chest. She breathed quickly and shallowly, but she resisted crying. She refused to cry. Not for him.
"I refuse to remain here," she muttered to the night. She spoke with a fresh resolve in a steady, gritty voice. "I'm going to leave this pack. I'll discover my strength and return stronger than they ever imagined.
She located the pendant around her neck and gripped it firmly. It was her sole remembrance of her family and her identity before the world declared her to be nothing. She wasn't nothing, though. She was more than Lorenzo's treachery and more than they could see.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a howl in the distance, its melancholy tone sending a chill down her back. It reverberated across the woodland, not close nor far, but with a sense of foreboding. She took one last look back toward the packhouse and carefully stood up, her heart racing.
Then she vanished into the darkness, her determination unwavering despite her unknown course.
