Oletha found it very difficult to sleep even though her bedroom was very comfortable if somewhat shabby. She realised that, as the Curator’s daughter, she was sleeping on the second floor in what she told herself were Second Class bedrooms. Nevertheless they were large and attractive and there was opening out of her bedroom a sitting room where, as she had expected, she would eat alone. Because she was determined to find out everything she could about the Duke, she talked first to the housekeeper who had shown her where she was to sleep. “Have you been here a long time, Mrs. Fellows?” she enquired. “I have indeed, miss. Forty years next month it be and I’ve seen many changes durin’ my time and few for the better.” Oletha listened, knowing that it was a prelude to hearing Mrs. Fellows
