Because she had hoped to find something quickly to please the Duke, she was making no effort to start cataloguing as she knew that Mr. Baron would have done on arrival. Instead she was examining the shelves, finding there was very little order or arrangement on any of them. She would sometimes find a book that had been published two or three years earlier next to one that had been printed in the sixteenth century or an ancient manuscript that was faded and tattered, although on examination it proved not to be as old as its appearance suggested. She had begun to think that the talk about there being an undiscovered goldmine on the shelves in the library was nothing but a rumour.
