“Is this the sanctuary of Apollo, Mama?” Calliope asked. Adara took her daughter’s hand. “No, love. This is the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. When people come to Delphi, they must stop here first. We’re here to thank the goddess for bringing us to Delphi safely. Lucius and Phoebus stepped forward to join them. They all walked down along a path among the trees, just outside the sanctuary’s retaining wall. A small bridge over a cool mountain stream led to the western entrance of the sanctuary. “It’s beautiful!” Calliope exclaimed, stopping to look up at the ancient temple of Athena that stood directly before them. “It looks very old,” Phoebus added. “It is,” Adara answered. “But this is the newest temple. There was another, older one, but it was destroyed over seven hundred years ago.”
