“I had thought about going into the city.” He could not look at her.
“Are you mad?” she asked. “Would you put our lives in danger again? Rome is a wolf’s den, and we would be torn to shreds. Someone is bound to recognize us.”
“You don’t know that, Adara. Look at me.” He pointed at his face and held out his arms. “Who would recognize this?”
“What about the children? What about me? Would you have us burned beyond recognition too?”
Lucius turned on her, horrified.
Adara shut her eyes. “I’m sorry… I’m just scared, Lucius. Until we’re out of Italy, we’re not safe. What would you want to go back to Rome for anyway? The old domus was sold years ago, and anyone who was a friend thinks you’re dead, or would be too afraid to help us if you revealed yourself.”
