Chapter 2 – Eyes Across the Room
The conference hall buzzed with chatter, soft footsteps echoing across the polished floor. Adaeze entered with the same precision and poise she had always carried—her Christian Louboutin heels clicking sharply against the marble. Her designer blazer and tailored trousers projected authority, every detail a declaration of control.
Her eyes scanned the crowd, taking in familiar faces—and then she saw him.
Kian Okafor.
He stood across the room, perfectly composed, his navy suit tailored to perfection, crisp white shirt, and polished Italian leather shoes. A subtle gold watch peeked from under his cuff, a hint of understated wealth. Even the faint scent of expensive cologne drifted toward her.
Their eyes met for a heartbeat, and the world seemed to shrink around her. She could feel the old tension coil in her chest—the anger, the irritation, the attraction she had never fully buried.
As Kian began speaking, outlining the proposal for his engineering firm’s partnership with her law firm, Adaeze forced her attention to the documents in front of her. But her mind wandered, betraying her carefully constructed composure.
For a fleeting, impossible moment, she remembered their secret nights in university—stolen kisses in quiet corners, touches that made her forget everything else, the thrill of being forbidden. And then, the bitter memory of how it had ended: the guilt, the shame, the anger, and the unresolved desire. No one knew. It had been their secret.
She clenched her pen, forcing herself back to the present. Focus. He’s here for business. Nothing else matters.
But every time his gaze swept the room and flicked, even for a second, toward her, that old spark—desire, frustration, unfinished business—ignited deep inside her again.
He spoke eloquently, his voice smooth and confident, highlighting how the partnership would benefit both firms. Adaeze noted every word, every calculated gesture, every flick of his cuff. She had to admit it—even as much as she hated to—he was brilliant. And infuriatingly attractive.
She told herself it was just business. She would stay professional. She would not look at him again.
And yet, she couldn’t help stealing another glance.
