A Shadow in the Dark

538 Words
The weight of the bargain settled over the chamber like a storm waiting to break. I didn’t know what Ravena had just agreed to, but the way her jaw tensed told me **it wasn’t good.** The pale-eyed man—our so-called benefactor—watched us with quiet amusement, his fingers tracing absent patterns in the air. Power radiated from him, thick and cloying, **but there was something else here.** Something unseen. **Someone unseen.** I felt it the way I had in the ruins before—the sense of being watched, of something shifting just beyond my vision. **A shadow. A presence.** Ravena stiffened beside me. She felt it too. “Your deal is struck,” the masked man murmured, his gaze flickering between us. “Try not to die before you fulfill your end of it.” He stepped back, the torchlight flickering around him. The figures behind him remained motionless, as if carved from the very stone of this place. “Let’s go,” Ravena muttered, gripping my wrist and pulling me toward the exit. **Too fast.** As if she didn’t want to linger a second longer. I resisted just enough to glance over my shoulder. **That feeling was still there.** And then— The shadows near one of the pillars **shifted.** Not in the way darkness moves with flickering light, but with intent. With **purpose.** A figure was there. Or had been there. **But by the time I focused, it was gone.** A chill licked down my spine. **That wasn’t just anyone.** Ravena yanked me forward. “Move. Now.” We made our way through the winding corridors of the underground stronghold, the weight of the air pressing against us with every step. Neither of us spoke until we reached the surface, where the cold night air bit against my skin like a warning. Only then did I stop and turn to her. “What was that?” She didn’t pretend to misunderstand. Her dark eyes flickered with something unreadable. “We were being watched.” I crossed my arms, ignoring the throb in my shoulder. “By who?” A pause. **Too long.** Then— “No one you want to meet,” she said flatly. I studied her. “But someone you’ve met before.” She exhaled sharply. “Forget it, Vaelora.” I didn’t correct her for using my name. “I don’t like being kept in the dark.” Her gaze hardened. “Then get used to it. In this world, there are things you’re better off **not knowing.**” Before I could argue, the wind shifted. The air around us **stirred**, carrying something with it. A whisper. Not spoken. Not real. But I **felt** it, threading through my mind like smoke. *You should have left her in chains.* I froze. My pulse slammed against my ribs. **That voice.** It wasn’t Ravena’s. It wasn’t mine. And it sure as hell wasn’t from any of the masked figures underground. This voice was deep, smooth, edged with something dark. Something dangerous. I turned sharply, scanning the landscape. Nothing. **No one.** But I knew, with absolute certainty, that I hadn’t imagined it. Someone **was here.** And he had been watching me for a long time.
