Not your Beta

I knew revealing our true plan of action would probably frighten River a bit, but she took that aspect of the truth far greater than I thought she would. But when I told her the correct time frame, I saw the shock in her eyes. Her lips came apart in a silent o. My hand itched to reach out and gently close her mouth, flowed by quickly covering her lips with mine. After blinking several times she closed her lips, opening them briefly only to close them again. Standing I held out my hand and waited for her to gently lay hers in my rather large hands, compared to her small delicate ones. With a light tug I pulled her to her feet, and placed her arm through mines, before proceeding back to the house. "I know you have even more questions but they can await until our next meeting. With the Dukes passing you will have to observe his death, as you were his fiance. Which means you will have to avoid the next two weeks of soires, and balls. I will try to pay a visit sometime next week, and the following week. But I must make them seem like I am only a friend paying a visit to your home. During these two weeks I will send letters if we come across any information you need to know immediately. If you happen to have any visions between that time that might help us or yourself, I would appreciate a letter from you as well." Glancing down to my right I allowed my eyes to travel the side of her face. Her green hues were shielded by the long lashes. Her eyes down cast. She could hear me, and I was sure she was feeling at a loss in what to do or say at this time. I suddenly felt a wave of angst and worry, and I knew it was her emotions. Stopping I turned her to face me, tilting her head with a touch of my finger, lifting it lightly. Her green hues staring into my soul. We were only a few feet from the door leading back into the house. "I promise you River. You're safe. I will keep you safe. Abigale will keep you safe. I will allow nothing to harm you. " Her heart rate head speed up briefly, but it became calm as my words left my lips. letting her chin go I patted her shoulder before claiming her arm once more and moving inside. As soon as we entered the room her mother was standing beaming at the two of us. My eyes darted to Abigale, and she was on her feet in an instant. "Thank you for seeing us today Madam. " Bowing a bit, " Abigale and I will take our leave. I hope to pay a visit next week, in better circumstances." "Oh yes that would be lovely Lord Black. Thank you ever so kindly for coming and seeing My dear lovely daughter during this terrible time. I shall see you out. Shall we?" Glancing to River one more time I dipped my head and followed the now beaming Mrs. Scarlet out the door. Our carriage was already waiting. Abigale darn nearly jumped as I followed quickly after her. I knew she had a lot to say. And questions glore to ask. I wasn't in the mood to answer any more questions. I wanted more than anything to simply go back inside that house and bring River with me, and leave this annoying time period, with all its annoying rules. But I needed to be patient. We had a mission first. Pulling at my cravat to breathe a bit better, I took my seat across from Abigale, my eyebrows rising at the look on her face. "Alright spit it out." Leaning back against the padded wall, her small frame rocks as the cart sets in motion." You don't let her out of your site once you bump into her at that party. You disappeared last night from the manor after you found where she lived. And we rush over here this morning to speak to the constable. That part I know perfectly well. But while I sat speaking to her sister, I happen to look out the window a catch several questionable scenes. You were far too close, and your eyes when you were speaking to her showed more care than I have ever seen shown me in the 2 years we have worked together." Waving Her small hand she rolled her eyes."I am simply offended."Though the words left her mouth she had a small smirk on her lips. "I was simply being tentative, and we need her help. She's a seerer. Maybe even an Oracle. I am going to need you to help her until we find a proper trainer in this period." Her head turns slowly back to me from the window. "I don't mind helping her at all. Though her gift really isn't my thing. We will find out if the TBB has some worthy here. But you sir can cut the tentive hero act. She's your mate." The words left her mouth with the feeling of it's a fact, and not a question. My eyes shifted to the window glazing out blindly at the passerbys. "Did our garden stroll give it away" "No. You sniffing my neck like a predator briefly last night when I seek you out at the party. I was quick. But I had only lingered long around Miss Scarlet. And briefly your eyes gave you away when she rounded that corner, while we were inspecting our dead target. But the garden show you put on was a sealer in the deal. I wasn't 100 percent till you confirmed just now. Leaning forward a playful smirk played on her lips her bright blue iris almost dancing. I already know you intend to bring her back. There is no doubt a werewolf would leave his mate behind. You will either choose to stay here,. which I doubt, or bring her with you. But our time and her time is a rather large gap. She will adjust that for sure. But I am concerned with how she will handle TBB." My eyes still on the moving outside, a sigh filtered through my lips. "She will adjust just fine, and by what she told me of herself she will handle TBB with ease. It may just be a bit overwhelming. She is a good young lady. But she has seen and dealt with some horrible things. Turning my attention back on Abigale I leaned my head back against the padded cushions. She's my mate. And even though we have a mission, my focus will go to her naturally until she and I are fully mated, or our bond thickyen, so that it can ease Rayden. He wanted to claim her at that sorie. But he is being patient for now. I never thought I would have a mate. After 50 years in our world I gave up. I gave up rank. I gave up my pack. I joined the guardianship, and then TBB. I gave up hope in finding a mate." snorting softly to myself. "Apparently my search was in the wrong time period. The moon goddess has quite the amusing thought process." Closing my eyes I hear Abigale laugh."Aye your goddess sure does. But the gods are always like that. Renor I am truly happy for you. I hope you know that. But did she have any clues at all to help us clean up things here? " shaking my head slowly. "No. She only been courted by the Duke for a short time. She informed me that she saw things pertaining to him. But nothing that will give us a lead. I informed her in about two weeks we will make plans to attend another party with her there. I will send a letter after a week to come see her. And we will proceed from there. "Oh...I see .. .In a week you will visit all charming and grand. wiggle your way in deeper with the fam. Then attend another party that she will attend. And proceed to court your mate. I heard nothing in this scheme that involves our mission. You know our original one." I open my eyes smiling a little at her sarcasm. "My mate comes first. You will take on seeing what we can dig up around his home. I will see about a proper master for River at TBB. Those are our first task. Our original mission is completed for now, without us even having to get dirty. This is clean up duty." I closed my eyes again and heard her snort. "Sure I will go and check the old bastards home. While you watch over your mate. Sounds about right. Just know two things Renor. I am not your Beta. And this is not Pride and Prejudice.
