Chapter 3: Duat

Alex woke up slowly. She felt no pain, running her hand over her body she also feld no blood. Confused she sat up and looked around. She wasn't in the road any more. She slowly lifted her hand, allowing the sand to run through her fingers. Looking around she made a mental note of two things. One, she was sitting unhurt, in the middle of the desert, and two, she was certain she is going bat s**t crazy. Hearing a scuffle behind her, she couldn't help her scream as she looked up into the eyes of some dog-like creature. She was pretty sure no dog, or jackal for the matter could be that massive. The animal, when hearing her scream, merely stoped moving and watched her. It's golden eyes seemed too intelligent for a mindless beast. Slowly she got to her feet, trying not to startle the animal into attacking. "Nice puppy, stay right there." she murmured softly, trying to edge away from the thing. But the animal had other ideas, to fast for the eye too see it moved forward, grasping her dress in its mouth, it tugged, all the while moving backwards. Alex gasped but noticed, while the dog was determined to pull her in that direction, it was careful to keep it's sharp teeth away from her skin. "You want me to follow you? Okay. Okay, yeah. I can do that. I can totally follow a random oversized dog into the desert." sarcasm dripped of her voice at the last part, more for her own benefit than the dog, who, content that she will follow, let go of her clothing. She took a few seconds to really study the animal. It had gold eyes, shining with understanding and intelligence. Its fur was greyish in colour, with large pointing ears. Its tail was fluffed up, with a slight curl towards the end. All in all he was beautiful. But she was still scared as hell. As she followed him deeper into the desert she let her thoughts wander. She remembered dying. And now she was lost in the desert. What did she mis? Or maybe she didn't die and she was dreaming? Yes. Maybe her body was in the hospital, maybe they got to her in time. She smiled a little at the thought of waking up, Sam was probably quite worried about her. They walked for about two hours, although it was difficult to tell time, she did know, however, that her legs felt like jelly and she needed to rest. Deciding the sand is as good as any place to plop down she tried to lower herself gracefully, but the exhaustion in her legs betrayed her, and she fell face first into the sand, even rolling a little bit. "f**k! Can't i get a break here!?" She shouted at no one in particular, only to scream when someone answered. "You only had to ask if you wanted to rest. I assure you, I wouldn't leave you behind. It is my purpose to guide you." She tried to turn around quickly, only to loose her footing and go down again, feeing the sand move around uncomfortably in her clothing. She heard a slight chuckle and met the eyes of a handsome boy. His gold eyes were watching her in amusement, a lock of grey hair falling infront of his eyes. But the part that confused her was his lack of clothing. He had a skirt type of cloth around his hips, and nothing else. Glancing around she noticed the dog had disappeared. "Who are you? Was that your dog? And what do you mean you are my guide?" She rambled over the questions. Anxious for answers, hoping to make sense of whats going on. The stranger smiled, but his eyes were wary, as if she was the loony one. You might be she thought to herself, dusting off the last of the sand, eyeing the man expectantly. "I am Wepwawet, guide of the deceased to the gates of Duat. And the 'dog' as you put it, was a wolf, my wolf to be exact. He is my second skin. Now come. We need to reach the gate before sundown, before Ra drives his bardge through and the door locks for the night." She stared at him, shocked. Ignoring his hand she shook her head. " I'm sorry did you say Duat? As in the club? Or the afterlife? Because i don't want to go to either!" He seemed confused when she mentioned a club, but his features were also growing more annoyed and impatient. Maybe because you called him a dog, she grinned bitterly when the thought popped in her mind. " Enough, we need to leave now. Demons roam here at night." With that cryptic and scary statement he grabbed her arm and started dragging her with him. She tried prying his fingers of her arm, but only ended up tiring herself out. She could see the sun was going to set soon, it's light grazing the sand dunes. It was beautiful but she didn't appreciate it, her mind was going in circles. He said Duat. Afterlife. That means she is infact dead. She felt numb. I died she thought to herself. I got shot. Alex sighed, trying to keep the tears at bay when they reached a cave in the sand. It was made out of stone, but pitch black. Confused she looked to Wepwawet. "This is where I leave you, Anubis will take over now. Goodluck, and may your heart be in your favor little human." Just as he finished speaking he distorted. His body shimmered and then, where there was a man, stood the grey wolf again, it's golden eyes the only remaining feature. With it's muzzle it nudged her into the cave. Then it turned and darted away. Leaving her alone, once again, faced with darkness.
