FABIAN Slamming the door of my study, I threw myself on the couch. I didn't want to see anyone, especially not my parents, after all the reason I lost Abbie, the only person who ever made me feel alive. Abbie was an Omega and a maid and I was a coward not to admit my feelings for her because I was afraid. Afraid of what the pack would think, afraid of my reputation. To date, the pain in her eyes and the blood on her mouth when I rejected her and severed the bond haunted me. And now, I was to marry Kate, her supposed best friend. All I felt was emptiness. I missed Abigail's scent, her voice, her touch, the bond we shared, the nights I would hide and tiptoe out of my room to the maid's quarters, or sneak her into my room to make love to her. My parents were arguing in the living room. They always did this ever since the banishment. "What exactly do you want?" my dad snapped at me after Abby's banishment. Everyone noticed I was sulking and kept to myself. "I want you to leave me alone!” "Leave you alone after covering up your s**t, you disgraceful idiot.” "Calm down, Zander," my mom said. "Fabian is still hurting. The silly girl was his mate. Give him the chance to grieve." "And you think banishing her was the smartest move despite knowing the consequences of breaking a bond?" my dad laughed. "I warned the both of you, but you went on with your evil plan." He turned to face me. "Son, in twelve months, you will become alpha. Nobody wants a weakling and a failure as a leader so get yourself together and deal with the consequences of your mistakes." This went on for over fourteen days now, and whenever they mentioned Kate's name, it made me want to vomit. Although she was Beta's Tom's daughter, Kate would never make me happy. She was nothing compared to Abigail. My hatred grew when she banished Abigail, all I felt for her was hate. I hated her with every fiber of my being, especially because she expected me to love her. "She's a good girl with perfect manners," my mom would always praise her. My mom and dad kept arguing and I felt like hitting the wall. Tired and irritated, I grabbed my jacket and headed for the door. It was like the more I stayed in the house, the more my anger intensified. When I reached the foyer, I saw a familiar figure packing up his tools; it was Josef, Abigail's dad. He worked as the house gardener and had always been polite and very hardworking, treating everyone with respect. My heart squeezed with guilt. Josef loved his daughter to a fault and strongly opposed her working here as a maid. He looked so broken and defeated; he slumped as he wiped his sweat from the back of his palm. "Well, well, well, look who's leaving. The old man finally had enough, huh? Can't stand working for the alpha anymore? Couldn't stand your daughter's banishment after trying to rope innocent Fabian into her mess?" Dimitri, the head of staff and a bald sadist snapped at Josef. Dimitri was gamma and always treated the omegas like dirt. I remember almost tearing him to shreds when he tried to hit on Abigail. Josef flinched but said nothing. He packed his tools, ignoring Dimitri, but Dimitri didn't let him and kept taunting him. "What's the matter, old man? Cat got your tongue, or should I say disgrace got your daughter, huh?" He burst into cruel, mocking laughter. Josef clenched his fists but said nothing. I lost it when Dimitri grabbed Josef's shirt and kicked his backpack. "Where do you think you're going, old man? You can't quit." "Please let me go," Josef said, trying to get his backpack and gather his tools, but Dimitri stepped on his backpack, scattering his tools, and shoving him off. "You know what happens to omegas who resign, right? You're defying the alpha, and no one will ever hire you because you're pathetic, worthless, and useless. You're going to die of hunger and loneliness. Unfortunately, no one will miss you." I couldn't take it anymore. "Back off," I growled, using my alpha power on Dimitri. He fell flat on his face, his face twisted in shock. "Get out." "Yes, yes, Fabian," he bowed and scurried away like a scared rat. Josef's face hardened as he looked at me. He was trying to mask his emotions, but I could see the hate in his eyes. It was so strong. The silence was oppressive. I wanted to say something, but I didn't know what to say or explain. So I said something trivial, pretending like nothing happened. "Why are you resigning?" He looked at me with a sad smile. "I'm getting old and need an easier job." "What job is easier than gardening?" I smirked. "Would you prefer to work in the pack's cement factory?" "Humor me," he grumbled under his breath. "I'm sorry, but I have to leave." "Wait," I rushed after him, blocking his path. "Have you heard from Abigail?" "I don't want to talk about it," he said, his voice thickening. The man was broken. "Goodbye, Fabian." Not done talking, I used my alpha aura, subduing him. He began coughing. All I wanted was to know where Abigail was. "What do you want?" he said between coughs. "You banished her and broke the bond link, so how am I supposed to know where she is?" Sighing in defeat, I ran a hand over my hair. "I didn't mean for things to get this bad." He stared at me bitterly. "Unfortunately, some actions have consequences. I hope that your conscience is clear. Have a nice life." His comments dripped with sarcasm, and he walked away. He turned around slowly to face me. "I trust the moon goddess, and I know that she will take care of my Abbie wherever she is. I hope that one day I get to see my daughter again, alive and healthy." I watched him leave this time and couldn't stop him. Then I headed to the pack's bar, feeling like a zombie. I needed something strong to take my mind off things. My best friend, Kennedy, had reserved a seat for me. He'd been supportive all this while and even knew about my bond with Abigail. "You look bad," he said. "What's with the long face?" Ignoring him, I ordered drinks, planning to drink to a stupor. I was drinking my seventh shot of tequila when I spoke. "I don't want to marry Kate. I need to find Abbie." Surprisingly, Kennedy nodded. He's never been in support of my relationship with Kate and knew that she was wrong for me. "My honest opinion has been that you should boycott this wedding because getting trapped in an unloved marriage is worse than hell. Find Abbie instead. we can try to track her down “ I scoffed, "You think it's that easy? Do you know the uproar that's going to cause, especially among the omegas?" "Who cares about them?" he sucked his teeth. "You're going to regret it if you marry Kate." He said a lot of things and was only looking out for a friend, but I had no choice. Two nights later, the moon was full and bright. I stood beside my dad, watching listlessly as my pack mates held lanterns and witnessed my engagement ceremony with Kate. Everyone could tell I was unhappy; even Kate wasn't happy, although she faked her smiles and accepted the congratulations from her silly friends. All my parents wanted was to unite us and ensure the continuation of our pure bloodline. An alpha and beta combination was perfect. Kate noticed I was cold and distant to her, and she stole glances at me. We stood in front of a large altar where the elders were waiting. We were dressed in traditional clothes made of peacock feathers, and when it was time to exchange the vows, I recited the words I had memorized without any emotion. "I, Fabian, take you, Kate, as my mate. I promise to protect, respect, and support you as long as we both shall live." Kate said her vows, and we performed the ritual of cutting our palms with a knife, letting our blood drip into a bowl. Once it mixed, our bond was sealed. I lifted the necklace and a bracelet, each with a pendant shaped like a wolf, and pu t it on Kate. Our kiss was brief and awkward, and I pulled away almost immediately because all I could see and sense was Abbie.
