In Xavier's mind, Ellie had never been someone who would bow her head.
Especially when it came to matters regarding him.
He still remembered that winter, five years ago, when thick snowflakes fell from the sky. He stood amidst a pile of snow, wearing a white sweater, wanting to ask her why she had suddenly disappeared. Just a week ago, everything had been fine between them.
At that time, Ellie stood coldly on the second-floor terrace of the Nelson family mansion, her face distant as she gazed at him.
"Xavier, you're nothing more than a butler's son. If you didn’t resemble my brother, Vincent, just a little, I wouldn’t even look at you."
"You don’t honestly think that just because we’re attending the same university, you’ve earned the right to be my future husband, do you?"
"I suggest you take a good look in the mirror before you dream about that. You don’t deserve it!"
Yes, Ellie…
We were never meant to be!
Seeing that Ellie had not responded, Xavier's patience thinned. He was about to tell her to leave when Ellie finally spoke, her voice firm, "Fine."
Xavier’s pupils contracted slightly, surprised by her response.
Ellie walked over to the table, hesitating before picking up a glass of wine.
She had a mild alcohol allergy since childhood. After giving birth to Leo four years ago, her body hadn’t fully recovered, and the allergy worsened. A few days ago, she had been forced to drink a couple of glasses, and she had a fever ever since.
If Xavier didn’t forgive her now, Leo would be worried again.
But…
After thinking for a moment, Ellie decided she owed Xavier an apology. She steeled herself and took the drink.
"I'm sorry, Xavier."
Ellie wasn’t good at drinking, and the strong whiskey burned her throat, making her eyes water.
"I'm sorry, Xavier."
One glass.
Another glass.
…
Ellie was the one drinking, yet for some reason, Xavier's chest grew heavier, and he felt a growing sense of unease.
Though he didn’t want to admit it, the truth was, the moment she took that first glass, his heart softened.
But he forced himself to stay calm. Five years ago, he had given his all, but what did he get in return?
In this lifetime, one can only make a mistake once!
After drinking most of the table's alcohol, Ellie was already dizzy, her body slumping.
But even in her haze, she hadn’t forgotten to apologize to Xavier, murmuring "I'm sorry" over and over.
"Alright, Xavier, it's been ages since we saw each other. Don’t waste your time being angry over this trash. Someone else will take care of her. Let’s go to the private room. I, on behalf of Turner Medical, want to discuss the supply of medical equipment for the new hospital in the east district."
Xavier remained silent for a moment, lifting his eyes to stare directly at the speaker.
His cold, sharp gaze was like a blade, chilling as a hawk’s strike. It made Ariella’s neck tingle, and her smile froze on her face without her noticing.
"What is it, Xavier?"
"Ms. Marshall, I don’t like unfamiliar people calling me so familiarly. Secondly, if you want to talk business, please make an appointment with my secretary. Lastly…"
Xavier paused, standing up and walking past Ariella and the others. He reached the completely drunk Ellie and lifted her in his arms.
"My people, even if I don't want them anymore, aren't for you to bully. Everyone, behave yourselves!"
With that, he strode out of the private room, leaving the others in stunned silence.
After a long pause, someone with poor social awareness asked, "Ariella, are you sure Xavier really hates her?"
"Of course. Didn't you see the look in his eyes just now?"
...
The driver pulled up to the entrance of the hall. Austin quickly spotted the boss standing outside in a thin shirt, holding a "sopping wet" woman in his arms despite the freezing temperatures.
"Oh my God."
Austin quickly cranked up the car’s heater, then hurried to Xavier’s side with a winter coat.
"Goodness, don’t you know your stomach’s bad? You had surgery last month. The doctor said not to expose yourself to the cold, don’t you remember? Why didn’t you wait for me to come before stepping out? The old lady will have my head if she finds out."
Xavier handed Ellie over to Austin, quickly putting on his coat.
Once inside the car, he succinctly explained, "The jacket got dirty, so I threw it away. Prepare a new one for tomorrow."
"Got it." Austin nodded, suddenly realizing something. "Wait, does this mean you’re not going home tonight?"
"Mm, going to the hospital."
Xavier glanced at Ellie beside him.
She was burning up from a severe allergic reaction, her exposed skin bright red, almost like a boiled lobster. Her head rested against the glass, and her delicate face was contorted in discomfort.
"Have someone prepare the house in Hawkin Bay."
Austin nodded thoughtfully.
This was the first time he had seen the boss so close to a woman other than Lucy. And now, he was having a house prepared for her. Was he planning to keep her around?
"Mr. Gomez, Mrs. Gomez has invited many of Tanaxes' socialites to the mansion at the end of the month..."
Xavier closed his eyes and let out a soft "Um-hum."
Just when Austin was confused, Xavier suddenly said something shocking.
"Help me draft a marriage contract."
...……
In the hospital, Ellie didn't fall asleep until around 4 AM, and when she woke up, it was already noon the next day.
As soon as she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Xavier's stunningly handsome face.
It seemed like five years had left no trace at all. If she had to say anything, she thought, it would be that he had become a little more mature and composed.
"Thank you for bringing me to the hospital last night."
"You're welcome, it's not the first time."
Xavier lazily sat on the single sofa, his legs crossed, one hand resting on the armrest while he leaned on his head.
Ellie, feeling awkward, lowered her gaze.
The last time she came to the hospital was after high school graduation.
At the graduation party, she confessed to her neighbor, Vincent, and to boost her courage, she drank a whole bottle of red wine. Not only was she rejected, but she almost suffocated from an allergic reaction to alcohol.
Thankfully, Xavier noticed in time and took her to the hospital.
Later, after she sobered up, Ellie, looking at Xavier's face with features similar to Vincent's, impulsively asked if he would be her boyfriend.
When they became a couple, people around them often said that Xavier was nothing more than a substitute for Vincent.
This was an unresolved issue that lingered between them.
Thinking about this, Ellie felt that she still owed Xavier a sincere apology.
Moreover, Leo was his child, and given that Xavier's attitude toward her was still relatively good, she thought if she apologized properly, even if she couldn’t be forgiven, at least it might open up more options for Leo 's treatment.
So, Ellie gathered her courage and was about to apologize to Xavier.
Suddenly, she saw him place a document in front of her, with two bold words on the cover——
Marriage Contract!
