Kara woke up to the sound of her phone buzzing on her nightstand. She groggily reached over to answer it, hoping it wasn't another telemarketer. But when she saw Emily's name on the screen, she quickly answered.
"Hey, girl!" Emily exclaimed. "I have some news."
Kara sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "What's up?"
"I just got an invitation to the Douglas' annual charity gala," Emily said, her voice barely containing her excitement. "And I was wondering if you'd like to come with me."
Kara's heart skipped a beat. The Douglas' charity gala? Wasn't that the same event where the town's elite gathered to mingle and show off their wealth?
"Why would you think I'd want to go to that?" Kara asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"Come on, Kara," Emily said, laughing. "It'll be fun! We can dress up, eat some fancy food, and maybe even rub shoulders with some rich people."
Kara couldn't help but be tempted. She had always been curious about the Douglas family, and this could be her chance to get a glimpse of John in his natural habitat.
"Okay, fine," Kara said finally. "I'll go with you."
Emily squealed with excitement. "Yes! I'll pick you up at 7 pm sharp. Don't forget to wear something fancy!"
Kara hung up the phone, feeling a mix of emotions. She was excited to attend the gala, but she was also nervous. What if she ran into John? What if she said something embarrassing?
As the day of the gala approached, Kara found herself thinking about John more and more. She wondered what he would be wearing, who he would be talking to, and what he would be thinking about her.
On the night of the gala, Kara put on her best dress and did her hair and makeup. Emily picked her up at 7 pm sharp, looking stunning in a red gown.
"You look amazing!" Emily exclaimed, eyeing Kara's outfit.
Kara smiled, feeling a little more confident. "Thanks, you don't look so bad yourself."
The gala was being held at the Douglas' mansion, and Kara couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as they pulled up to the entrance. The mansion was lit up like a palace, and the sound of music and laughter filled the air.
As they entered the ballroom, Kara's eyes scanned the room for any sign of John. And then, she saw him, standing across the room, looking handsome in a tuxedo.
Their eyes met, and for a moment, Kara forgot to breathe. John smiled, and Kara felt her heart skip a beat.
"Wow," Emily whispered, following Kara's gaze. "He's definitely looking at you."
Kara's face grew hot as she quickly looked away. "Don't be ridiculous," she said, trying to play it cool.
But as the night wore on, Kara found herself drawn to John again and again. They danced, laughed, and talked, and Kara felt like she was getting to know him for the first time.
As the night drew to a close, John walked Kara and Emily out to the garden. The music and laughter faded into the background as they stood under the stars.
"Thanks for coming tonight," John said, looking at Kara with a smile. "I didn't think you'd show up."
Kara smiled back, feeling a sense of connection with him. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world."
John's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Kara felt like she was drowning in their depths. She knew that she was in trouble, that she was falling for the one person she shouldn't fall for.
But as John leaned in to whisper something in her ear, Kara's heart skipped a beat. She knew that she was in this now, and she couldn't turn back.
"I have a surprise for you," John whispered, his breath tickling her ear. "Meet me at the old oak tree in the park at midnight. Come alone."
Kara's heart raced as she nodded, her mind reeling with possibilities. What did John have planned? And why did she feel like she was taking a risk by agreeing to meet him?
As they said their goodbyes, Kara couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She knew that her life was about to change in ways she couldn't even imagine.
