The weather in New York today looks brighter than in. I've been in the capital of the United States for two days now, all because of Mr. Scott's class that I'm taking. He said that I should go with two of his chosen children to New York to participate in a literacy contest somewhere.
To be honest, I don't feel very comfortable here. My mind is always haunted by Mark and his pack, who are ready to attack whenever they want. Especially now that I'm away from Jasper's watchful eye. Ah, that's right. Jasper knew that I was going to New York for a few days. I didn't have time to tell him.
However, it seemed like Mary had told him, besides that. Here, I was trying not to be attracted to the good-looking participants from other colleges. It's crazy of me, but it's the truth. I can't shake the feeling of running into another handsome guy. Oh, Jasper, I hope Cassandra won't tell you about this one.
"I heard you're dating, Jasper. Is that true, Rosalie?"
I turned to one of the team members from our college who was chosen by Mr. Scott. His name was Zaydan, and he was from Dubai. He was also a famous boy with good looks and a wallet that was more charming than his face. He was one of Jasper's friends in college.
"What's wrong?" I asked as I organized the journals I was carrying.
"Jasper was never that drunk in love with someone. Did you know? He just got drunk off a few bottles of whiskey after you disappeared without a word on our first day in New York," Zaydan explained as he showed me a video of Jasper in a club with a stack of whiskey bottles next to him.
I guess vampires can't get drunk, I thought.
"Let me call him," I said as I checked my phone and typed in his contact name.
"So, you haven't called him at all since we've been here?" Zaydan was puzzled.
"Yeah, I just don't want to contact him," I said as I walked away from Zaydan with my cell phone starting to vibrate, indicating my call was connected to Jasper.
"I thought you'd forgotten about me here."
I laughed for a moment before focusing back on the call. What the hell is Jasper sulking about? Just because I didn't have time to give him any news? It's so cute and adorable.
"I didn't intend to do it. However, at least you don't have to get drunk either, right? I don't think vampires can get drunk."
I said that as I laughed and went inside my dormitory to put the journal that I picked up from the library yesterday afternoon with one of the participants from another campus. However, for some reason, I felt like I wasn't getting any response from the other side. Was the network connection bad? I tried looking at my cell phone. But the network was full, and the call was still connected.
"Hello? Jasper, are you still there?"
"Rosalie, tell me who told you that I was drunk."
Her tone suddenly became heavier than before. What was wrong with what I said? Was she offended? Or was she embarrassed that I knew that fact?
"Zaydan, isn't he your close friend in college? We were talking in the dorm hallway earlier, and he told me about you."
Silence, no more response, until I was shocked to hear the sound of breaking glass and Elle's scream simultaneously. I had to put my phone away to hear this.
"Rosalie, listen to me. Don't panic or anything. I need you to come out of your room, now."
What the hell, why did I feel tense all of a sudden? What the hell else is going on? If I knew it was going to be like this, I wouldn't have called Jasper and kept him in the dark until I finished the race.
"Jasper told me there was—"
"Now, Rosalie!"
My cell phone fell as I was startled by Jasper's yelling. But just as I was about to pick it up, I could see Zaydan standing in the doorway with his pupils bright red. The grin on his face made me reflexively take a step back.
"As it should be, Jasper told you about who I really am. Isn't that right, Rosalie?" He asked as he moved closer to me.
Oh God, why does this have to happen to me all the time? I thought.
***
Okay, this isn't what I had in mind. Wasn't I supposed to be tortured when I was kidn*pped by someone? So why am I now being served various kinds of luxurious and delicious food? I'm even sitting on a soft sofa that looks very expensive.
"Why don't you like the food?" asked Zaydan.
I squinted my eyes; this could be a trap. Maybe all the food had been poisoned, and if I fell for it in an instant, he would laugh as I convulsed.
"I didn't poison the food," Zaydan said.
Tsk, he seemed to understand my expression, which looked very suspicious. As he tasted the foods one by one, I was speechless. Don't vampires not eat human food? Or is this just loyalty to make me want to eat his food?
"Why do you want to be his subordinate, Mark?" I said.
I could see him stop the steak he was eating and look at me for a while before laughing. "I know why he hates you so much. More than Rosie," he said as he wiped the food off his lips with a tissue.
"You could have killed me yourself, couldn't you?" I asked.
"I didn't want to get my hands dirty," Zaydan replied.
"So, you're going to hand me over to Mark? Good then; at least I can meet him one more time," I muttered. I really couldn't resist taking the macaron that was in front of me. It was my favorite food.
"It turns out you like macarons," Zaydan said.
"A little, I only like them as a snack. Not in large quantities," I said.
Zaydan laughed, but somehow, I took that as a bad sign for me. "You're unique," he said.
My hunch was right; his eyes turned a dark red color. Unlike before, which was bright red, this time his eyes looked shady and dark red, and somehow, I felt calmer after seeing his eyes. Does he have the same power as Ethan? A situation controller?
"You're bringing new doom to us immortals. You're the one who will make some strict rules crumble in an instant. You are also the one who will break the saying that Elle's vision will always be true and unchangeable. You will change the order of our world, Rosalie," Zaydan explained.
I was silent for a moment and tried to digest his words, changing their world order. Isn't that impossible? That's too much. It was impossible for me to change the unwritten rules of their lives just like that. Let alone break Elle's vision? Gosh, how much influence my arrival really had!
"I'm not lying, Rosalie. You had a huge impact on us. Then Mark saw that potential and saw you as a threat to him," Zaydan explained.
"That's not possible. I'm only human."
Before I could continue, the door to the room where I was kidn*pped suddenly opened violently and revealed Jasper with an angry expression. So did Elle, but when she saw me and Zaydan sitting together, their expressions turned to confusion.
"I told you, Rosalie. I'm not lying," Zaydan said.
