# Chapter 7: The Letter That Could Change Everything
The drive back to the city was unusually quiet.
Elena stared out of the passenger window, her thoughts fixed on the bracelet around her wrist. Every clue they uncovered seemed to lead to another question.
Who had tried so hard to erase the children of St. Mercy Orphanage?
And why were Elena and Adrian being watched?
The black SUV that had followed them along the country road disappeared just before they reached the city limits.
"They're gone," Adrian said, checking his rear-view mirror one last time.
"For now," Elena replied.
Neither of them believed the danger had passed.
---
The next morning, Adrian received a call from the receptionist at **The Herald**.
"Mr. Cross, there's a package here for you and Miss Hart."
"Who sent it?"
"There wasn't a return address."
Within minutes, Adrian and Elena were standing over a plain brown envelope in his office.
The handwriting on the front immediately caught Elena's attention.
It was shaky.
Uneven.
Almost certainly written by an elderly hand.
"Miss Maggie," she whispered.
Adrian carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were several photocopied documents, an old map of St. Mercy Orphanage, and a letter.
Elena unfolded it carefully.
---
**Dear Elena and Adrian,**
*If this letter has reached you, then I was able to send it before they found me.*
*For years I lived in silence because I believed no one would ever listen. I was wrong.*
*You both deserve to know the truth.*
*You were not abandoned by the people who loved you. You were separated during the chaos when the orphanage was being investigated.*
*Someone altered your records so that no one would ever know you had been together.*
*There is one final piece of evidence I could never keep at the orphanage.*
*Locker 27.*
*Central Railway Station.*
*The key is hidden inside the diary.*
*Please hurry.*
*There are still people who will do anything to stop you.*
*— Margaret Ellis*
---
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Adrian broke the silence.
"The diary."
He quickly reached into his backpack and removed Miss Maggie's diary.
They searched every page until Elena noticed something unusual.
The back cover felt thicker than the rest.
Using a small pocketknife, Adrian gently loosened the worn leather.
A tiny brass key fell onto the desk.
"Locker 27," Elena whispered.
---
Before they could leave, Adrian's phone rang.
It was Detective Noah Reyes.
"I've been trying to reach you."
"We found more evidence," Adrian said.
"So did I."
Noah's voice was serious.
"Margaret Ellis has disappeared."
Elena's heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"She left the nursing home yesterday."
"We know."
"We've searched everywhere."
A brief pause followed.
"There's no sign of her."
Elena looked down at Miss Maggie's letter.
"I hope she got away."
"So do I," Noah replied.
"But be careful."
"What happened?"
"The men connected to St. Mercy aren't just destroying records anymore."
His voice grew quieter.
"They're following people."
---
An hour later, Elena and Adrian arrived at Central Railway Station.
Hundreds of commuters filled the platforms.
Locker 27 stood in a quiet corner near the old waiting room.
Adrian inserted the brass key.
It clicked.
The locker door slowly opened.
Inside rested a single metal box.
No money.
No jewellery.
Only documents.
On top lay a small cassette recorder with a note attached.
**Play me.**
Adrian pressed the button.
Static filled the air.
Then a woman's trembling voice echoed from the speaker.
"This is Margaret Ellis."
"If anyone is listening..."
"...the orphanage was never acting alone."
"There were powerful people helping them hide the truth."
"I wrote every name in my notebook."
"If anything happens to me..."
"...promise me you'll protect the children who survived."
The recording suddenly stopped.
Elena wiped away a tear.
"We'll protect them."
Beneath the recorder was a folder marked **CONFIDENTIAL**.
Inside were copies of adoption records.
Most belonged to children Elena had never heard of.
But one page made Adrian freeze.
His file.
Unlike the version he had always known, this one was complete.
His birth name.
His admission date.
A handwritten note at the bottom.
**Placed with Elena Brooks for temporary protection. They refused to leave each other's side.**
Adrian stared at the words in disbelief.
He slowly looked at Elena.
"So it was real."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"We really were together."
---
Neither of them noticed the man watching from across the station.
Hidden behind a newspaper, he quietly spoke into an earpiece.
"They've opened the locker."
A calm voice answered.
"Don't interfere."
"Not yet."
"Let them find the final file."
"And then?"
The reply was cold.
"We take everything."
The man folded his newspaper and disappeared into the crowd.
For Elena and Adrian, the mystery had finally become personal.
They were no longer just investigating the past.
They were uncovering the story of their own lives.
And somewhere, hidden among the remaining files, was the final secret that would reveal why they had been separated all those years ago.
