# Chapter 8: The Missing Pages
The train station buzzed with the sounds of arriving passengers, but Elena and Adrian barely noticed the crowd around them.
They hurried back to Adrian's office, carrying the metal box from Locker 27.
Once inside, Adrian locked the door and pulled the blinds shut.
"If these documents are real," he said, "they could explain everything."
Elena carefully opened the folder again.
Inside were several complete adoption files, photographs, and handwritten reports.
Most of the papers had been copied years ago, as though someone had wanted to preserve the evidence before it disappeared.
Then she noticed something unusual.
"There are page numbers."
Adrian looked closer.
"One... two... three..."
His expression changed.
"Pages seven and eight are missing."
"They've been removed."
The missing pages seemed intentional.
Whatever had been written there was important enough for someone to hide.
---
As Adrian continued reading, Elena unfolded another document tucked inside the folder.
It was an old floor plan of St. Mercy Orphanage.
Unlike the map they had already found, this one showed a room that had never appeared on any official blueprint.
**Archive Room B**
"What is this?" Elena whispered.
Adrian leaned over her shoulder.
"I searched every official record."
"This room doesn't exist."
A handwritten note had been added beside the blueprint.
**Only the Director and the Trustees had access.**
"Trustees?" Elena asked.
"So the orphanage wasn't operated by one person."
Adrian nodded.
"There were others behind it."
---
A knock suddenly echoed on the office door.
Both of them froze.
Another knock followed.
"It's Detective Noah," a familiar voice called.
Adrian opened the door cautiously.
Noah stepped inside carrying a thick case file.
"I've got news."
His face looked more serious than usual.
"What happened?" Elena asked.
"We found Margaret Ellis."
Elena's eyes widened.
"Is she alright?"
"She's alive."
Relief washed over Elena.
"But she's in hospital," Noah continued.
"She collapsed while trying to avoid the men who were following her."
"Can we see her?"
"Not yet."
"The doctors say she needs to rest."
Noah placed several photographs on the desk.
"We also searched an abandoned storage building connected to St. Mercy."
One photograph showed rows of dusty filing cabinets.
Another showed broken boxes scattered across the floor.
The last photograph caught Elena's attention.
It showed a large portrait hanging on the wall.
A group of trustees stood beside Sister Miriam.
One man's face had been scratched out.
"Who is he?" Elena asked.
"We don't know."
"The damage is too old."
Noah sighed.
"But whoever removed his face wanted to hide his identity."
---
That evening, Elena returned to her apartment.
She placed the friendship bracelet and silver locket on the table.
The apartment was unusually quiet.
As she made tea, she noticed something beneath her front door.
Another envelope.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
No stamp.
No sender.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Elena and Adrian as children, standing beneath the large oak tree outside St. Mercy Orphanage.
On the back, someone had written:
**You promised to protect each other.**
A second message followed beneath it.
**Some promises have consequences.**
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
She immediately called Adrian.
"I just received another message."
"I'm coming over."
---
Twenty minutes later, Adrian arrived.
They examined the photograph together.
"I've never seen this one before," he said.
Elena looked closely at the background.
"There."
Near the chapel stood a woman watching the children.
She wasn't wearing a nun's habit.
Instead, she wore a dark coat and held a notebook.
"Do you recognise her?"
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"But she looks familiar."
He turned the photograph over once more.
Hidden beneath the handwritten message was a faint embossed symbol.
A raven.
The same symbol appeared on the corner of several missing adoption files.
"It can't be a coincidence," Adrian murmured.
"No."
"It has to mean something."
---
Across town, inside a dimly lit office, an elderly man stood before a wall covered in newspaper clippings.
One article displayed Adrian's latest investigation.
Another showed Elena entering the records office.
Without a word, he removed the photograph from the wall and dropped it into a fireplace.
The flames slowly consumed it.
A younger man entered the room.
"They found Locker Twenty-Seven."
The older man nodded calmly.
"I expected they would."
"What do we do now?"
The old man looked out of the rain-covered window.
"They're getting close to Archive Room B."
He turned back slowly.
"They must never discover what's inside."
The younger man hesitated.
"And if they do?"
The old man's expression remained cold.
"Then our secrets end."
He paused before adding quietly,
"And so does our freedom."
Outside, thunder rolled across the city.
For Elena and Adrian, every answer uncovered another mystery.
The missing pages, the hidden archive, the mysterious trustees, and the stranger with the raven symbol were all pieces of a much larger puzzle.
And somewhere behind them all was a person who had spent twenty years making sure the truth remained buried.
But the truth had begun to fight its way back.
And it was no longer willing to stay hidden.
