# Chapter 11: Project Sparrow
The rain had finally stopped by dawn.
Inside Detective Noah Reyes's office, the atmosphere was tense. The leather folder Lillian had given Elena lay in the centre of the conference table. Every page inside had been carefully preserved for nearly twenty years.
Noah put on a pair of gloves before opening it.
"If this is authentic," he said, "this could reopen every case connected to St. Mercy."
Adrian leaned forward.
"What does Project Sparrow mean?"
Noah carefully unfolded the first document.
The title read:
**PROJECT SPARROW – CONFIDENTIAL**
Beneath it was a list of children's names.
Some had check marks beside them.
Others had red circles.
Elena's eyes widened when she found her own name.
**Elena Brooks – Subject 07**
Just below it was another familiar name.
**Adrian Cole – Subject 08**
"What does 'Subject' mean?" Elena whispered.
Noah frowned.
"I don't know."
Another page explained that certain children had been selected for a "special transfer programme," but much of the text had been deliberately blacked out.
"It looks like someone tried to destroy this before hiding it," Adrian said.
---
As they continued reading, they discovered a series of reports signed only with the initials **R.M.**
One report caught Noah's attention.
*"Subjects 07 and 08 continue to rely on one another. Separation recommended immediately."*
Elena felt a lump form in her throat.
"They separated us on purpose."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"They thought we'd forget."
---
A knock interrupted the silence.
One of Noah's officers stepped inside.
"Detective, we've identified one of the men who escaped from the cemetery."
Noah stood.
"Who is he?"
"The vehicle belongs to a private security company."
"Owned by?"
The officer handed him a file.
Noah's expression darkened.
"The Raven Foundation."
Elena looked up.
"So the foundation still exists."
"It changed its name years ago," Noah replied.
"But the people behind it never disappeared."
---
Later that afternoon, Adrian returned to **The Herald** to compare the new evidence with his investigation notes.
As he pinned another document to the board, something unusual caught his eye.
The photographs from the orphanage all showed the same stone statue in the courtyard.
A small angel holding a bird.
He zoomed in on one of the images.
At the base of the statue was a tiny metal plaque.
The words were difficult to read.
After enlarging the photograph several times, they finally became clear.
**In Memory of the Sparrows**
Elena stared at the screen.
"It wasn't just the name of the project."
"It meant something."
---
Meanwhile, across town, Sister Miriam sat alone inside an old convent.
Age had not softened her cold expression.
A younger man entered the room.
"They've recovered the Project Sparrow files."
She remained silent.
"They also met Raven."
That finally caught her attention.
"Lillian should have stayed hidden."
"What are your orders?"
Sister Miriam stood and walked to a dusty bookshelf.
She removed an old photograph of St. Mercy Orphanage.
Several smiling children stood outside beneath the oak tree.
She quietly touched two familiar faces.
Elena.
Adrian.
"They remember each other now."
She closed the photo album.
"Then the final secret will soon be revealed."
"What secret?"
Sister Miriam looked out the window.
"The fire."
The younger man frowned.
"Everyone knows the orphanage burned down."
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"They know the story we told them."
---
That evening, Elena returned to her apartment.
She sat quietly by the window, watching the city lights shimmer in the distance.
For the first time in years, her memories came not as broken flashes but as complete moments.
She remembered laughing beneath the old oak tree.
She remembered sharing bread with Adrian.
She remembered promising they would both find a family someday.
Then another memory appeared.
Smoke.
Children running through the halls.
Someone shouting,
"Get them out!"
A man carrying Adrian toward the front entrance.
Elena reaching for him.
"No!"
Their hands slipped apart.
The memory ended.
Elena gasped.
Tears rolled down her face.
"It wasn't an accident," she whispered.
"The fire started after we were separated."
At that same moment, Adrian experienced the very same memory.
He remembered turning back toward Elena through the smoke.
He remembered someone pulling him away.
And just before everything faded into darkness, he heard a woman's voice cry out,
"Protect the Sparrows!"
His phone rang.
It was Elena.
"I remembered," she said before he could speak.
"So did I," Adrian replied.
For a long moment, neither of them said anything.
Finally, Adrian broke the silence.
"The fire wasn't what separated us."
"No."
Elena looked at the bracelet still wrapped around her wrist.
"Someone separated us first."
Far away, inside an abandoned estate hidden in the forest, an elderly man watched security footage from the cemetery.
He paused the video on Elena's face.
Then on Adrian's.
He smiled faintly.
"They've reached the truth."
The man closed the file marked **PROJECT SPARROW**.
"Now," he whispered,
"they're ready to learn why they were chosen."
The final secret of St. Mercy Orphanage was waiting.
And it would change everything Elena and Adrian believed about their past.
