# Chapter 1: The Letter That Changed Everything Rain tapped softly against the windows of Elena Hart's small apartment as she stood in the centre of the living room, surrounded by cardboard boxes filled with her adoptive parents' belongings. Three weeks had passed since the funeral, yet the silence in the apartment still felt unfamiliar. It was the kind of silence that reminded her she was truly alone. She picked up an old family photograph. Her adoptive mother smiled warmly while her father stood beside her with his arm around a young Elena. They looked like an ordinary family. They had been one. Growing up, Elena had never doubted that she was loved. Her parents never hid the fact that she had been adopted. They simply told her that they had found each other when she was six years old and that family was built by love, not blood. But one question had always remained unanswered. *"Where did I come from?"* Whenever she asked about her life before the adoption, her parents gently admitted that the records were incomplete. The orphanage had closed years ago, and very little information remained. They promised that if they ever discovered more, they would tell her. Now they were gone. As Elena continued sorting through the boxes, she found a small wooden chest tucked beneath a stack of old books. It was dusty and locked. Her father had always kept it hidden. Inside one of the boxes, she found a tiny brass key attached to a faded ribbon. Her heartbeat quickened. The key fit perfectly. With a soft click, the chest opened. Inside were several documents, a silver locket, and a sealed envelope with her name written neatly across the front. **For Elena. Open only when you are ready to know the truth.** Her hands trembled. She carefully broke the seal. Inside was a short letter written in her father's familiar handwriting. *"My dearest Elena,"* *"If you are reading this, your mother and I are no longer with you. There is something we kept hidden, not because we wished to deceive you, but because we wanted you to grow up free from fear."* *"The orphanage listed on your adoption papers was called St. Mercy Orphanage. Before we adopted you, we were warned never to ask questions about it."* *"Years later, I tried to investigate. Every record I requested disappeared. Every person I spoke to refused to answer."* *"Someone wanted the past buried."* *"Please be careful."* *"Love always,"* *"Dad."* Elena stared at the page. The room suddenly felt colder. She reached into the envelope again and discovered another folded sheet. It was an adoption record. Half of the page had been torn away. The names of her biological parents were missing. The section describing how she arrived at the orphanage had been deliberately blacked out. Only one sentence remained untouched. **Place of Origin: St. Mercy Orphanage.** A loud clap of thunder echoed outside. Elena closed her eyes. Almost instantly, a sharp pain shot through her head. A dark hallway. Bare footsteps. Children whispering. Someone crying. A little boy reached toward her. *"Don't let go..."* The vision vanished as quickly as it had appeared. She gasped, gripping the edge of the table to steady herself. "What was that?" she whispered. She had experienced strange dreams since childhood, but never while awake. Trying to calm herself, she opened the silver locket from the chest. Inside was a tiny photograph of two children standing side by side. The picture was faded, making their faces impossible to recognise. On the back, written in delicate handwriting, were four words. **Find the forgotten names.** A chill ran through her. That evening, Elena searched every online archive she could find. Nothing. No articles. No photographs. No official history of St. Mercy Orphanage. It was as though the place had never existed. Then, buried deep inside an old newspaper archive, she found a single headline from nearly twenty years earlier. **ABANDONED ORPHANAGE DESTROYED BY FIRE. NO CASUALTIES REPORTED.** Only one photograph accompanied the article. An old brick building surrounded by smoke. As Elena stared at the image, another memory flashed before her eyes. The same building. The same entrance. A frightened little boy gripping her hand. Running. Someone shouting behind them. Then— Darkness. Her breathing became uneven. She quickly closed the laptop. "I've been there," she whispered. "I know I have." The next morning, as she prepared to leave for work, she noticed a plain white envelope lying beneath her apartment door. There was no stamp. No address. Only her name. Inside was a single sheet of paper. No greeting. No signature. Only one sentence. **The orphanage never disappeared. It only changed its name.** Elena looked toward the empty hallway outside her apartment. Whoever left the message was already gone. For the first time in her life, she realised her adoption wasn't simply a story with missing pages. It was a mystery. And someone was making sure she would never stop searching.
