Chapter 10
Hours later, rescue teams arrived. Aurora Station was a ruin of glass and ice. Matt's pod was empty. No trace of him—only a faint warmth on the glass.
Marcus’s body was found near the entrance, weapon still in hand.
Kelvin and Silver stood outside as dawn broke over the snow.
“Do you think he’s really gone?” she asked silently.
Kelvin looked at the horizon. “Men like Matt don’t die. They just change form.”
She smiled faintly. “Then what are we now?”
“Survivors,” he said. “Witnesses.”
She stepped closer, resting her forehead against his chest. “Then let’s make it mean something.”
He wrapped his arms around her as the northern wind swept past, cold and endless. Above them, the aurora shimmered—green ribbons across a pale sky.
For a moment, she swore she heard Matt's voice in the wind:
“You kept your promise.”
Epilogue
Six months later, in a quiet café in Copenhagen, Silver typed the final line of her article.
The Last Witness: The Man Who Tried to Save Humanity.
She signed it with her full name. No aliases. No fear.
Kelvin walked in, placing two cups of coffee on the table. “Still writing history?”
She smiled. “Someone has to tell it right.”
“And after that?” he asked.
She looked out at the sea. “After that, we will live.”
