The attack

Chapter 5 They left the inn before dawn. Clouds are low, heavy with snow. Kelvin drove south toward the ferry that would take them to Alabama. Marcus’s men were already there. The ambush came fast—two SUVs obstructing the road, headlights blazing. Kelvin smashed the brakes, the car spinning sideways on the ice. “Out!” he yelled. They dove into the ditch as bullets scorched the windshield. Kelvin fires back, short bursts cutting through the snowstorm. “Keep your head down!” he shouted. Silver bent toward the ridge, clutching the drive. A man held her from behind—Marcus. “Game’s over, Silver.” He turned her arm, forcing her to her feet. “You were never supposed to remember. Matt warned me this would happen.” She stared at him. “You killed him.” Marcus’s eyes lowered with something like regret. “No. I protected him—from himself. You think he died for a cause? He died because he became the experiment.” A single shot rang out. Marcus went back, a red bloom passing across his coat. Kelvin stood behind him, g*n raised. “Stay away from her,” Kelvin said. Marcus stumbled, blood on his lips. “You think killing me stops this? Felix owns everything now.” He fell into the snow. Silver looked at Kelvin. Felix? “The conglomerate funding Seraph,” he said slightly. “And if Marcus worked for them, they know where we’re going.” She clenched the drive. “Then we move faster.”
