The soldier showed him to where Ema was and apologized for their act.
He saw Ema, who was well treated by the astrologers; the astrologers' army had observed her presence at the boundary for days and had gone to arrest her for questioning. The chief apologized to her for the forceful capture and proceeded to read her fate. Even though she didn't say anything to Ema, she recognized her as the end of the Stevensons' hegemony in Attah. The astrologers aren't lovers of the Stevensons' cruelty, but they choose to remain out of Attah's business to escape their own demise.
