Chapter 2: Secrets in the Dark

1527 Words
Loving Maxwell feels like living on the edge of something extraordinary, as if standing at the top of a cliff with nothing below, yet knowing he’ll catch me before I fall. I can’t see what lies beneath, but it doesn’t matter. I trust him. Completely. I’ve heard the whispers, the murmurs of his destiny, of how ruthless he’ll be when he becomes Alpha, of how he’s already being groomed for greatness. They talk about his strength, his charm, his future. But none of them know him the way I do. None of them see the boy who pulls me into his arms when no one’s looking, who shares the secrets he shouldn’t, who makes me believe that, despite everything, I’m meant to be with him. And I am. He just hasn’t told the pack yet. But I know he will. Soon. My phone buzzes in my hand as I sneak through the house, careful not to make a sound. Maxwell: I’m waiting. Don’t keep me waiting too long, Raven. A smile tugs at my lips, and I quicken my pace. The cold night air nips at my skin as I hurry down the empty streets of the Omega housing district. The houses around me are dark, everyone either asleep or pretending to be. If they knew where I was going,if they knew I was sneaking out to meet the future Alpha, they wouldn’t believe me. Not that I’d tell anyone. Maxwell’s made it clear how important it is to keep this between us for now. Some things, after all, are worth the wait. When I reach the clearing, I spot him right away. Maxwell leans against a tree, his arms crossed over his chest, his posture effortlessly confident. The moonlight highlights his dark hair, casting an almost ethereal glow around him, and for a moment, I forget how to breathe. He looks like he belongs here, like the forest bends to him, the shadows and light framing him perfectly as if everything in the world is made just for him. “You’re late,” he says, his voice low, smooth, with a teasing edge to it. His eyes, however, are locked on mine, intense and unwavering. “I’m here now, aren’t I?” I shoot back, stepping closer, my pulse quickening. “You made me wait,” he says, uncrossing his arms, a slight smirk playing at his lips. “You know I hate waiting.” My stomach flips as he steps toward me, closing the gap in just a few long strides. Before I can react, his hands are on my waist, pulling me toward him. “Say you’re sorry,” he murmurs, his breath warm against my ear. I roll my eyes, trying to ignore the way my heart races. “I’m not sorry.” His lips twitch into a smirk. “You will be.” Before I can respond, his lips crash into mine, and everything else falls away. Kissing Maxwell is like standing in the middle of a storm, daring it to consume me. It’s wild and consuming, and I never want it to end. His hands are firm around my waist, possessive, as his lips move against mine. I don’t think about how wrong this could look to the pack, or about the fact that I’m an Omega, the lowest of the low. When I’m with Maxwell, none of that matters. He pulls back just enough to look at me, his thumb brushing over my cheek. His eyes are soft now, the sharp edges of his usual confidence replaced by something deeper. “You have no idea what you do to me, Raven,” he says, his voice rough. “Maybe you should tell me,” I reply, grinning as I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him back toward me. His lips curve into a wicked smile. “Careful. I might just show you instead.” My cheeks flush, but I don’t look away. Not when it’s him. We settle against the base of a nearby tree, the moss soft beneath us. Maxwell pulls me close, and I rest my head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, a soothing sound that calms me in ways nothing else does. “You know,” he says after a while, his voice breaking the comfortable silence, “you’re the best part of my day.” I glance up at him, raising an eyebrow. “Really? Even better than training? I thought you lived for sparring.” He chuckles, his fingers tracing lazy circles on my arm. “Training’s just part of the job. You’re different.” I smile, letting his words sink in. It’s moments like this that remind me why I trust him so much. Maxwell isn’t like the rest of the pack. He sees me,not my rank, not my past, just me. “You’re the best part of my day too,” I admit quietly. “Good,” he says, his hand sliding up to tilt my chin so I’m looking at him. “Because I don’t plan on letting you go anytime soon.” My heart swells at his words, and I can’t help but smile. “You’d better not.” It’s not just his words that pull me in,it’s the way he looks at me, like I’m the only person in the world. It’s the way he touches me, gentle and firm at the same time, like he’s claiming me without saying it aloud. I don’t care what the pack would say if they knew. I don’t care that I’m an Omega and he’s the future Alpha. Maxwell loves me. I know he does. And when the time comes, when he finally steps into his role as Alpha, he’ll choose me. I have no doubt. “You’ve been quiet tonight,” Maxwell says, breaking into my thoughts. “Just thinking,” I reply, leaning into his touch. “About?” “Us,” I admit, my voice barely above a whisper. “About the future.” His lips twitch into a smirk. “You’re always thinking about the future, Raven. You don’t need to worry so much.” “I’m not worried,” I say quickly. And I’m not. Not really. “Good,” he says, his voice soft. “Because the future is ours. No one’s going to change that.” His words are a promise, and I cling to them like a lifeline. We spend the rest of the night talking in hushed tones, our laughter echoing softly through the trees. Maxwell tells me about his training, about how his dad has been pushing him harder than ever. I tell him about my mom, how she’s been extra tense lately, even for her. It’s easy with him. Always easy. By the time I finally leave, the sky is starting to lighten, the first hints of dawn creeping into the darkness. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” I ask, hesitating at the edge of the clearing. “You think I’d let you go a day without me?” he replies, his voice full of warmth. I smile, my chest tightening with the weight of everything I feel for him. “Goodnight, Max.” “Goodnight, Raven,” he says, his gaze lingering on me as I turn and head back home. When I slip back into the house, the floorboards creak under my feet, and I wince, praying my mom is still asleep. I make it to my room without incident and collapse onto my bed, my heart still racing from the night’s events. I stare up at the ceiling, a small smile tugging at my lips. Maxwell is mine. And one day, the rest of the pack will know it too. The next day, I’m back at the training center, scrubbing bloodstains off the mats as if nothing’s changed. But it has. I can feel it in the way my hands tremble, in the way my heart races every time someone walks by. I’m on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. “Hey, Frost,” a familiar voice calls out, snapping me back to reality. I look up to see Tyler, his smirk as obnoxious as ever. “What do you want?” I ask, my tone flat. “Just thought I’d let you know there’s a meeting tonight,” he says, leaning against the doorframe. “Alpha Killian wants all the Omegas there. Guess he has something important to say.” I stiffen. “What kind of meeting?” He shrugs. “Who knows? Maybe he’s finally decided to get rid of you lot for good.” His words hit harder than I want to admit, but I don’t let it show. Instead, I glare at him. “Thanks for the update. Now get out of my way.” He chuckles, but doesn’t push it, sauntering off like he’s won some kind of prize. I take a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. But the knot in my stomach doesn’t go away. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned about this pack, it’s that “meetings” are never good news.
