RACHEL'S POV
Immediately those words left my lips he pulled in out off his cupboard with switch movements…pulled the trigger immediately and pointed it directly at me.
My blood went cold and my mind blank….
I suddenly felt the urge to pee.
I held on to the contract slip in my hand like it could save my life because it could.
"Please….please, I told you everything you need to know, I swear…"
He didn't fire. Just watched me flinch, watched me fall apart in front of him, like he was checking if the fear in my voice matched the fear on my face.
I wasn't sure about how to describe a beautiful monster, description would have been a lot of hustle, just mentioning the man in front of me was enough.
Who would have thought such perfect face card with innocent expressions could be this ruthless.
"Good. You're honest." He lowered the gun. "Let's see if it stays that way."
My legs nearly gave out.
"Tonight, my guards will go with you to your fiancé. You'll break things off him, that includes the gaddamn ring in your finger. Come straight back here and sign the contract." His voice never changed, never rose. That was almost worse than if he'd shouted. "If you don't comply, I put a bullet in his head myself."
The chill that went through me had nothing to do with the air conditioning.
I nodded. Couldn't find my voice. Tears slid down before I even felt them coming.
By eleven that night, the guards were assembled by the car, waiting.
I called him with my hands shaking so hard I almost dropped the phone.
He picked up, and for a second I heard something in the background, a voice, low, breathless.
Months of walking past hotel rooms and private lounges at Aurelio's had taught me exactly what that sound meant. I just didn't want to believe it. Not yet. Not from him.
"Where are you?"
"Why are you calling this late?" He ignored the question completely.
"I need to tell you something." My throat went dry as tears broke down again. Two guns were pointed at my head while I said it, the mafia boss standing close enough that I could feel him listening to every syllable.
He gave me a location. A busy plaza, I took a deep breath, a busy plaza would be full of people even at this hour. Relief cracked through the fear for half a second, maybe I could scream, maybe someone would hear me, maybe I could get to a police officer before…
The guard's hand closed around my arm like he'd read my mind. "Don't."
Before we left, one of them held out a hand. "Give me his number."
I hesitated. He snapped his fingers, impatient, and I handed it over with my heart in my throat.
They tracked him instantly. My stomach dropped when the address came back….a five-star hotel.
"That's wrong," I said. "He works at a supermarket. He's a cashier. He can't afford…"
Nobody listened.
We drove there anyway. I kept saying it the whole ride, this isn't right, this isn't his place, please just check again and they ignored every word.
The guards pushed the hotel room door open.
And there he was.
Not alone.
The scream caught in my throat before it could even leave. I stood in the doorway, everything in me going numb and burning at the same time, and some part of me, some stupid, desperate part … still walked toward him instead of running.
"Why?" My voice cracked in half. "Why would you do this to me?"
He scrambled up, stammering apologies, reaching for his clothes, reaching for me.
Behind me, I heard the safety click off a gun.
"Wait….wait, please, just let me talk to him…" I was crying so hard my chest hurt, my hands shaking like they belonged to someone else.
I didn't even know what I was crying for anymore, him, myself, the wedding in three days that didn't exist anymore, all of it hitting me at once.
I grabbed his hand and slapped him across the face. "Our wedding is in three days. Three days, and you're here, you are here fuckin someone else Alex?"
"Arghh…fine on Rachel, I did this for you….you starved me for years…through our relationship."
“You told me you could wait for me, Alex , why would you do this to me?" My voice broke out in tears as my chest tightened.
"I only said that because I wanted to respect you, your decision, your body…I'm a man and I have desires!! I just wanted to f**k it not the first or second time….”
My mind went blank in an instant.
“I love you Rachel, I did this for you….for us…. You said you wanted to wait till marriage and my scrotums…"
“I'm sorry…”
God help me, I believed him. I believed it enough that I was the one apologizing. I was the one holding onto him, telling him I still wanted this, telling him we could run, we could disappear somewhere they'd never find us…
The guard raised the gun.
"Break up with her, or he dies right here." The guards yelled and pulled the trigger. At that moment I remembered I had come here to actually break up with my finances.
My fiancé didn't even blink before he said it.
"I broke up with her."
Just like that. No hesitation. No fight.
I turned back to him, begging, "No…no, tell them you didn't mean that, tell them…."
He wouldn't look at me.
The guard dragged me out by the arm. I fought, twisted, screamed his name one more time, but the door was already closing behind me.
Back at the mansion, the contract was waiting on the table exactly where I'd left it.
I begged for one more call. Just one. My voice was nothing but tears and static by then.
He looked at me, unmoved. "You had one chance. You used it."
Then he said the only thing that would stay with me long after that night…
"The world doesn't favour kind people."
His words struck me hard in the chest as sweat and tears mixed together rolling from my face and body.
I have been faithful, I have been hoping on Alex …he was the love of my f*****g life…at least the person I had choosed.
I picked up the pen with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking, and I signed.
"Congratulations, you are Mrs Draven Vitali. Tomorrow is our white wedding.”
