Chapter Eleven: Lucas

293 Words
Six months after the blood moon eclipse, a raging thunderstorm raged outside as Lucas entered the world. Labor dragged on for endless hours of crippling, all-consuming pain. I lost track of time completely, trapped in waves of burning agony. Kael never once left my side, his hand crushed in my tight grip, his quiet words of encouragement never faltering through every contraction. “You’re incredible, you’re holding on so well.” “When this is over, I’m never letting you touch me again,” I gasped through another wave of torment. “Fair enough,” he chuckled softly, even as worry clouded his golden eyes. A clear, sharp infant cry cut through the rolling thunder outside the birthing chamber seconds later. Elara carefully lifted the squirming, warm newborn boy and laid him gently against my chest. He’d inherited Kael’s striking golden eyes and my dark hair, his tiny fists clenched tight like a born warrior before he’d even drawn his first full breath. “Hello, Lucas,” I whispered through tear-blurred vision. Kael knelt beside the bed, hot tears streaming down his cheeks. “He’s perfect in every way.” “He looks just like you,” I told him. “I was going to say he takes after you.” We laughed through our tears as our baby squawked loudly in protest, as if annoyed by our quiet exchange. Outside the stone walls, all wolves of the Crescent Pack lifted their voices to howl at the blood moon hanging low in the stormy sky. The ancient prophecy written centuries ago had fully been fulfilled at last. Chapter Hook: Messengers from distant rival packs traveled overnight to demand a meeting with the Alpha’s heir, plotting to seize the child’s unique power for themselves.
