My cheeks stung as the Luna of the Moon River Pack slapped me across the face.
“Get your s**t together, or I’ll make you a Rouge so fast,” she spat on me as she screamed. “The Alphas from all over the world are coming here for the annual Alpha meeting. I’ll be damned before some pathetic she-wolf ruins our pack's reputation.” I won’t be the one to ruin the Moon River Pack’s reputation, they do that for themselves.
My name is Aimee Mullis, and I was left with this pack after my mother was killed. Why the Moon Goddess hated me so much, I’ll never know. Here at Moon River, Brian and Kelly lead their pack as if everyone is beneath them. The hierarchy for this pack isn’t how it's supposed to be. When I was little, I was part of a different pack. The Alpha there treated everyone like family, and while things weren’t perfect, things were much better than they are here.
Here, they smack me around until I do what they want me to. Over time, it’s gotten easier to just do what they say. Tonight, I just have to finish getting the packhouse ready for the Alphas tomorrow. Most of them are staying in guesthouses on pack lands, but tomorrow, they’ll all meet in the house for the annual meeting.
After everything was done for the evening, I went to my room- the closet in the back of the packhouse. The room was just wide enough for me to fit a cot and a blanket that someone had thrown out. I had a few changes of clothes, a bar of soap, a toothbrush, and a few more odd things. I lied down on the cot. It should be any minute now. When our kind turns eighteen, our wolves awaken. They learn everything about our lives in a matter of seconds. It's intense, but it's also like having your best friend in your head. It'd be nice to have someone that didn't hate me around.
The heat bubbled from deep within. Finally. My spirit wolf awakened. She was quiet for a long time.
I’m so sorry Aimee. My name is Prism.
What are you sorry for?
You have Alpha blood, and they treat you like a pile of human garbage.
I don’t want to do this anymore.
Aimee, we’re going to get through this.
I woke up with an abundance of energy. Prism had spent the night tending to old wounds that I wasn’t allowed to visit the pack doctor for. For the first time in a long time, I felt great, and then, I was reminded of my situation. I walked into the kitchen and made the pack a breakfast of pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, ham, toast, and scones. If there was anything left, I would get to eat breakfast. I made extra today hoping to get a pancake or a scone. There weren’t any.
“Keep your filthy mutt eyes off of my mate!” a she-wolf roared. He was gawking at me, but she’d never admit it. I cast my eyes down in an attempt to show submission, but that went over like a lead balloon. Before I knew it, she was bashing my head into the floor. The smell of blood hit me as I began to seep in and out of consciousness.
